As part of the UC Santa Barbara Ethnomusicology Forum, UC Santa Barbara PhD candidate Eugenia Siegel Conte and UC Santa Barbara alumnus Max Jack (Ethnomusicology, PhD 2019) will present a lecture titled "The Art of Making a Scene: Vocal Disruption, Affective Regimes, and Public Space" on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 from 3:30-5 pm PDT via Zoom. Conte and Jack will discuss how they discovered unexpected links between their scholarly interests and have been collaborating to show how space/place, body, voice, and “affective regimes” (Mankekar and Gupta 2016) can lead to a recognition and reorganization of public space through the embodied poetics of voice. They will also talk about the importance of mentorship, friendship, creativity, and collaboration in scholarship.

The Rotary Club of Montecito is virtually hosting its annual “Back 2 School” fundraising event for Santa Barbara City College student scholarships on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at 4:00pm (PST).

Providing funding to the Santa Barbara City College for more than 25 years, the Rotary Club of Montecito continues to organize around raising money for scholarships allocated to students pursuing two-year degrees in career technical and vocational fields.

This year’s event is centered upon different “sponsorship levels” of varying amounts that include opportunities for exposure of people or businesses that choose to donate. Featured activities include a silent auction and special entertainment for attendees.

In partnership with the SBCC Foundation, the Rotary Club of Montecito and its donors have awarded over $100,000 to high-achieving students that have demonstrated academic excellence and community involvement.

The scholarships for the Club’s fundraiser are awarded to a collection of students, focusing on a wide array of interests, like medical studies, multimedia arts and technology, film production, early childhood education, marine diving technology, business entrepreneurship, and automotive technology. Recipients of the SBBC Foundation scholarships are nominated by SBCC Career Technical Education Program faculty members.

“Service above self,” is the motto of Rotary International and the foundation of the work done by Montecito chapter. Founded in 1953, the Rotary Club of Montecito regularly serves as an example of the impact countywide financial assistance can have on a community and the members that live there. The club regularly participates in volunteer activities in Montecito, the surrounding community, and in countries around the world.

Rotary is a network of more than 35,000 clubs in almost every country. The organization has 1.2 million members who come together to complete service projects to make positive, lasting change in their communities.

Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist, and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966—nearly a half century ago. They’ve played a variety of styles in a number of different groups as well as with their father, jazz giant Dave Brubeck. Dan and Chris form the foundation, with guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb, completing this dynamic quartet who perform concert series, and jazz festivals around the world.
