State Street Ballet – The Jungle Book

State Street Ballet presents The Jungle Book on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 7:30 PM. Rudyard Kipling’s famous tale of the “laws of the jungle” will ignite your sense of adventure onstage at the Lobero. Colorful, upbeat, and wildly entertaining, this original production has successfully toured throughout California and the Southwestern United States. With choreography by Artistic Director Rodney Gustafson and audience-favorite Kassandra Taylor Newberry, an original score by Czech composer Milan Svoboda, and mesmerizing digital projections by Jean-Francois Revon, State Street Ballet’s dancers will take you on an unforgettable journey through the jungles and forests of India.

haun is the author of multiple books and has given keynote speeches around the globe to universities, schools, and businesses. He produced and co-wrote the film documentary Bustin' Down the Door(2006) and is a past board member of Surfrider Foundation and the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club. The legendary surfer will tell us about his experiences over a lifetime and share his approach to how positive values can empower us to achieve more.

John Yau and Joan Tanner in Conversation

Artist Joan Tanner joins acclaimed poet and art critic, John Yau, Professor of Critical Studies at Rutgers University, for a conversation. Tanner is currently the subject of a solo SBMA exhibition, "Out of Joint: Joan Tanner" (through May 14). Yau has edited the "Brooklyn Rail" and "Hyperallergic Weekend," and has authored some 50 books of poetry. Having been a voice in the art world since 1975 when he began writing art criticism, he is among the most well-known critics of contemporary art writing today. Yau and Tanner reflect on how to stay out of joint, that is how to avoid cliché and stilted ways of writing and artmaking.

15th Annual Santa Barbara Revels May Day Celebration

SB Revels invites the entire community to enjoy its 15th annual May Day Celebration at noon on Sunday, April 30th, held at Center Court of Paseo Nuevo Shopping Center. This seasonal tradition to welcome in the Spring-time is FREE for everyone, and all ages are encouraged to attend.
There will be performances by the Revels Dancers, the Pacific Sword Company, members of the Santa Barbara Bagpipe & Drum Corps.
Everyone coming to the May Day festivities can join in singing seasonal songs and learning a traditional English Country dance, and there are flowers to make nosegays and posies. The afternoon culminates in the traditional may pole ritual.
