The Lure of Lighthouses & Dancing Waves Photographs by Dan Merkel

SBMM) presents The Lure of Lighthouses & Dancing Waves, an exhibit featuring more than 35 photographs of lighthouses and waves by the renowned and Emmy Award-winning surfing photographer and videographer Dan Merkel. The lighthouse photographs include images of lighthouses from near and far—from Cape Elizabeth and Cape Hatteras on the East Coast and Point Loma and Point Pinos on the West to Portugal and Australia. The images are accompanied by Dan’s breath-taking photos capturing waves throughout the world. Beginning on Thursday, January 26, the exhibit will be on view in SBMM’s Gallery and Munger Theater through August 27, 2023.

Inspired by the artistic collaboration of Ed Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz and the SBMA exhibition Scenes from a Marriage: Ed & Nancy Kienholz, this series explores what happens in fiction and life when artist couples work together or in parallel, and sometimes within competitive creative spaces.

Contemporary artist Cassandra C. Jones, whose work has shown in venues throughout the US and Europe, including Mass MoCA, Prix Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, and the MFA Houston, is joined by her husband, Mikael Jorgensen, the Grammy award-winning keyboardist for Wilco. The two reflect on marriage and being a creative couple in an audio-visual presentation and guided conversation with James Glisson, SBMA Curator of Contemporary Art.

“Global History and the California Missions: A Sea Story” with author Janet Dowling Sands

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) presents “Global History and the California Missions: A Sea Story” with author, artist, educator, and native Californian Janet Dowling Sands on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 7:00. This beautifully illustrated presentation will explain how the missions were inextricably linked to global maritime history and prehistory, including the latest research on the origins of California’s indigenous people, whose ancestors came to the Americas thousands of years before the first European soldiers and missionaries arrived. Cost is free for SBMM’s Navigator Circle Members, $10 for all other members, and $20 for members of the public. There will also be a pre-lecture reception for members only from 6:15-6:45pm.
