The James Webb Space Telescope Mission; Infrared Space Based Telescope Exploring the Universe
Featuring: Dr Matthew Greenhouse, NASA JWST Project Scientist | Astrophysicist NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
The James Webb Space Telescope is a space based infrared observatory developed by NASA as a follow on to the Hubble Space Telescope. Successfully launched on Christmas Day 2021, JWST has already made amazing discoveries. Engineering challenges of JWST included the unique orbit dynamics, a deployable sun shield, a foldable mirror and the infrared sensors; the “eyes” of the telescope. JWST infrared cameras were successfully deployed by our local community: Raytheon Vision Systems and Teledyne Imaging Sensors. What is unique about our infrared sensors is that they are able to detect light that has been traveling through space since the beginning of time! From the earliest epoch of time, for 13 billion years; from the furthest distance of the universe; our infrared sensor can “observe” the creation of stars and galaxies formed during this period of time. On Nov 8, Dr Matthew Greenhouse will discuss during Ventech’s event ( Cabrillo Pavilion; 5:30-7:30pm) the extraordinary engineering; technology and science of the James Webb Space Telescope!
