Trail Talk: Natural Hazards of Santa Barbara with Ed Keller

Mudslides, debris flows, and earthquakes are just of some of the natural hazards that are part of Santa Barbara’s geologic history. Join UCSB geology professor Ed Keller as he describes the origins and processes at work behind these natural hazards and the marks and evidence they’ve left on our local landscape over thousands of years.
Ed is one of the foremost experts on tectonic geomorphology especially with regard to earthquake reduction and prevention, and has also been studying the hydrologic processes in Southern California chaparral ecosystems and the role of wildfire in the recurrence of high magnitude flood and debris flow deposits. He is the author of Santa Barbara, Land of Dynamic Beauty: A Natural History, which describes our local landscape from Goleta to La Conchita and the geologic processes that have helped shape it.
The talk is FREE and part of the ongoing Wilderness Hiking Speaker Series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. The talks are the third Thursday of the month and feature topics related to hiking, backpacking, and our local natural history.
