TIPPING POINT. We all know what it means. Something’s way off balance.
The exhibit TIPPING POINT: too much / not enough—currently at the Arts Fund’s 6,000-square foot 821 State St. gallery space, the former Sur la Table—demonstrates how the existential threat of climate change is impacting the work of these seven artists whose focus is environmental decline. Each approaches the crisis from a different point of view.
“California is on the front lines of climate change,” says artist/curator Cynthia Martin. The sum of all its parts, in this timely show, tells a human-interest story. We survived a horrific fire and mudslide killing over two dozen people. We see the small farmers up north pulling buckets with earth from their wells. We see aquifers drying up because of water theft in that same area. We see sea levels rising. We experience coastal erosion. All this in our own backyard.
Beauty seduces the audience into the long gallery space. Once taken by the range of these seasoned artists, the TIPPING POINT message starts coming through loud and clear.
