THE CHRISTMAS REVELS: An Early California Celebration of the Winter Solstice

Richard Henry Dana and shipmates are invited to holiday festivities in Santa Barbara before the wedding of Anita De la Guerra, daughter of the Presidio’s Comandante, to Alfred Robinson, the local representative for a hide and tallow trading company. The sailors gather with the many friends and family members who come from far and near to begin the celebration. Enjoy this sharing of rich historic traditions drawn from the sea, the missions and Spanish ranchos, described in Dana’s classic book, Two Years Before the Mast.
