Tango is back to Buena Onda Empanadas – Four Maestros converge in Santa Barbara Thursday August 17.

August 17, 2023 @ 6:00 am PDT

After the smashing success of La LoCA Milonga in July, tango is back with a completely different experience: an intimate voice and piano performance by Camila and Ruy, accompanied by the beautiful tango dance pair, Geraldine & Claudio.

July 8th marked a whole new level for tango in Santa Barbara. A full tango orchestra, LA Tipica, played under the Santa Barbara stars to a rejoicing public. With twelve musicians on stage and an impressive row of six bandoneons, even by Buenos Aires standards, it was an extraordinary sight. It was the biggest tango orchestra ever witnessed in our town’s memory. What made it even more special was its origin story, connected to Santa Barbara. The orchestra began under the tutelage of Maestro Hugo Satorre, who gave his first post-pandemic concert in the USA when we invited him to perform at La LoCA Milonga in 2021. Since then, he has been touring and teaching in the US, and out of this effort, LA Tipica was born.

But we’re not done with 2023 yet! Next up is an intimate experience, a space of romance created by the lovely voice of Camila Lima and the piano of Ruy Folguera. They will be joined by the fun and engaging pair of Master Dancers, Geraldine and Claudio.

Four Maestros converge in Santa Barbara, and they are SoCal’s very own! Ruy has just finished arranging for the re-release of the best-selling Fito Paez album, “El Amor Despues del Amor,” and composing music for Amazon Movies and the upcoming Disney series “El Poder de los Girasoles”, and a biopic on Bob Dylan.

Camila has recently performed the role of Juliet in Gounod’s “Romeo and Juliet” at the Lyric Opera in Orange County and is heading next to sing with the show “Lost Letters of Love” of the White Nights Artistic Society.

Geraldine Freitag is the founder of La LoCA Milonga, USA Tango Vals Champion, and a favorite teacher in Santa Barbara. She lives in Los Angeles with her lovely daughter.

Claudio Otero is a pillar of Los Angeles and Orange County tango. With a career spanning over 35 years as a performer and educator of both Argentine Folklore and Tango, he is an influential figure in all the goings-on in SoCal.

These four artists, born and raised in Argentina, now consider SoCal their home and would love to share a taste of their homeland with their friends. Let them transport you to the beauty of other worlds under the magnificent Santa Barbara summer sky.

They are hosted by Nomad Tango and La LoCA Milonga. Nomad Tango is a non-profit dedicated to the promotion of the art of Argentine Tango. Alejandra Folguera, director of Nomad Tango, said, “We have precious few opportunities to meet and embrace each other,” and seeks to create a safe space for the community using the language of tango.
