On June 27, 2021, the Santa Barbara County Action Network (SBCAN) will be presenting the Public Defender’s Office Racial Justice Committee with a Special Recognition Award for its holistic efforts to eliminate racial disparities from the criminal justice system.
SBCAN is a grassroots organization that works to support social and economic justice, preserve our environmental and agricultural resources, and create sustainable communities.
Each year SBCAN hosts and annual North County Awards dinner where they recognize leaders in the community. For the first time ever SBCAN is presenting Special Recognition Awards to community members and organizations that have done exceptional work in the past year.
“The Racial Justice Committee is honored to be recognized by SBCAN,” said Maria Martino, Racial Justice Committee, Co-Chair. “The Racial Justice Committee looks forward to continuing its work in the upcoming year and collaborating with organizations in our community to create a safer space for all members.”
The Public Defender’s Office provides legal representation to people who are accused of crimes and who cannot afford a lawyer. The Racial Justice Committee is an expansion of the Public Defender’s Office holistic defense model that recognizes community engagement as a central component to enhancing public safety.
This year, the SBCAN North County Awards dinner will be held virtually on Sunday, June 27, 2021, from 4:30-5:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online: https://www.sbcan.org/
