On June 9th and 10th the 2023 festival will showcase 8 feature films and 16 short films. The Grom Program, a curated short film program, Q&A sessions and a 21+ VIP Lounge will be enjoyed at the Lobero & live music, vendors, a fashion show and more will be found down the street at the SBSFF Block Party on June 10th!
SBSFF will commence on Friday, June 9th at 6:00pm at the historic Lobero Theatre with an hour-long screening of short films including Water III by Morgan Maassen, Hunter Martinez’s Out Of The Rafters (world premiere), Sean Tully’s Innocnts, The Pusher by Steve Olson, Grom Control to Major Mom by Mikey Kampmann and Queens of the Break by Jordyn Romero and Jo Anna Edmison, followed by Keith Malloy’s Mind Surfing: The Connor Coffin Story presented by 805. At 7:30pm, there will be a Q&A session and a special presentation about the remastered 1970s film, Free Ride, by Bill Delaney. The session will feature Victoria Delaney, film producer and Bill’s wife, and pro surfer Shaun Tomson. The full screening of Free Ride will start at 8:00pm. The program for Friday night will conclude with a musical performance by Santa Barbara’s own, Glenn Annie at 9:45pm.
SBSFF kicks off Saturday morning with the Grom Program from 10:00 am to noon, presented by Surf Happens. Be sure to arrive early to snag some tasty goodies and delicious coffee from Montecito Coffee Company. The Grom Program will showcase a series of short films by the 2023 Rincon Classic Grom Division surf competition winners as well as five short films including Protect Your Ears by Jason Baffa, Forever Surfing Together As One by Layne Stratton presented by Waiakea, Black like Plastic by Graciela Cabello and Chris Ragland, Cyanotyping with Oriana by Lindsay Bauman, and Sendo featuring Parker Coffin.
The Saturday afternoon line-up is not to be missed. Starting at 1:00pm with the 2023 director’s cut of Footy by Erik Hatch, a skateboarding film that takes you on a thrilling journey through the archives showcasing some of the best skateboarders of the last 35 years, followed by a short film by JEEP, JFEB. The world premiere of acclaimed director, Joshua Pomer’s, latest film, ReBirth The Kill, begins at 3:00pm and showcases some of California’s biggest tubes ever ridden. Get ready to be awed by the radical stunts and insane action that will make you want to grab a board and hit the waves yourself. Kilgar’s Pivot, a short film by Santa Barbara local surfer Kilian Garland will follow. The world premiere of the nostalgic Allen Sarlo film The Allen Sarlo Super 8 Time Capsule which is a true appreciation of the growth, progression
and art in the sport of surfing will screen at 4:30pm, and will be followed by Standing On Water, a short film by Tommy Correy.
At 6:00pm the North American premiere of Untitled (Big Sky Limited by Andrew Kidman), a surf documentary film made over the course of five years, delves into the world of surfboard crafting and the relationships formed between novice and experienced shapers. At 7:30pm come experience Santa Barbara legend George Greenough’s 6-Pack of remastered 1960’s Film Shorts. The festival will conclude with Groundswell: The Other Side of Fear by Paul Taublieb, narrated by the captivating voice of Josh Brolin, and starring a cast of world- renowned surfers including Kai Lenny, Nic von Rupp, Matt Bromley, Torrey Meister, Bianca Valenti, and Makua Rothman at 9:00 pm.
While you’re catching all the amazing films at the festival, don’t forget to take a break and check out the SBSFF Block Party happening just across the street from the Lobero Theatre on Saturday from 12:00pm to 8:00pm. Jam out to bands and DJ sets with all day live music. Check out the latest trends in the fashion show presented by Rever Atelier and Tropicali. Mony’s food truck will be serving up mouth-watering bites. Enjoy deliciously refreshing adult beverages from 805 Firestone Beer, Lumen Wines, High Seas Mead, Ysidro and Flying Embers or stay hydrated with Considered Coffee, Guayaki Yerba Mate and Waiakea water.
