Live music, appetizers, wine, award winning documentary movie Margaret Singer: Seeking Light
In partnership with the Santa Barbara Art Association (SBAA), Art at the JCC will host a juried show at the Jewish Federation’s Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center from August 25 – October 16. The show will feature a mix of approximately one hundred works from various genres submitted by SBAA members and selected by Judge Jana Brody, of the Squire Foundation. We plan to honor founding and longtime members of Santa Barbara’s first Art Association, including longest standing member, and local icon, Margaret Singer.
The opening reception will be Sunday, August 25th, 2:00-4:00 PM at the Jewish Federation’s Bronfman Family JCC, 524 Chapala Street. In addition to showcasing up to 100 pieces by local artists, the reception will offer wine, hors d’oeuvres, live folk music by the Sweet String Sisters and a movie screening of Margaret Singer: Seeking Light award winning short documentary film (20 minutes). The reception is free and open to all.
During the opening reception, the life of the 98 year old (as of June 11), late Margaret Singer is celebrated and honored in the documentary short film, Margaret Singer: Seeking Light. This award winning 20 minute movie was premiered at the Santa Barbara Jewish Film Festival and we look forward to sharing with our greater Santa Barbara and arts community (at no cost; donations welcome). We honor, Margaret Singer, the local Santa Barbara artist and poetry icon, who is a lifelong member of the SBAA. Movie synopsis: Born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany, at the age of 17, tragedy and turbulence flung Margaret Singer far from her roots. With courage and purpose she bent darkness into light utilizing her gifts as an artist and poet and her innate sense of truth and joy. Following her own compass, Margaret broke every mold of expectation for a woman, an immigrant and a refugee. She has created a body of work that that will inspire generations.More about Margaret Singer: https://jewishsantabarbara.
