Presidential History & Success: Judging Presidents, an SBPL Lecture Event

November 13, 2017 @ 7:00 am PST

As the oft quoted saying goes, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Join the Santa Barbara Public Library and UCSB Arts & Lectures on Monday, November 13 at 7:00 PM for an event with Professor John Woolley to explore the history of the Office of the President and its relation to our current day.

Woolley, Professor of Political Science at UCSB and Co-Director of the American Presidency Project website, will speak first on Jon Meacham’s book,American Lion, and President Andrew Jackson’s place in history and then will delve into historical context, current politics, and what the past can teach us. During his presidency Andrew Jackson was a polemic figure and has been compared to the current President.

One of Professor Woolley’s areas of research focuses on the American presidency, particularly the aspects of presidential communication and unilateral action. He is the author of a number of publications, including The Presidency A to Z with Gerhard Peters (5th ed, 2012), “Persistent Leadership:Presidents and the Evolution of U.S. Financial Reform, 1970-2007” (Presidential Studies Quarterly, 2012), and the forthcoming “Do Presidential Memo Orders Substitute for Executive Orders? New Data” (Presidential Studies Quarterly, 2017).

The Library encourages the community to not only attend this event with Professor Woolley, but also the upcoming Arts & Lectures event with John Meacham on November 16 and the Central Library’s History Book Club on Thursday, November 30 at 10:30 AM. The History Book Club selection for this month is American Lion.
