North Shore 35th Anniversary Screening and Celebration

80’s Cult Classic, NORTH SHORE, Celebrates 35th at the Arlington

On Thursday, August 25th, from 6-9pm, LISTEN presents the 35th Anniversary screening of the 1987 cult classic surf movie, NORTH SHORE at the beautiful Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA. With guest appearances by stars of the film including, John Philbin (Turtle), Matt Adler (Rick Kane), Nia Peeples (Kiani), Gregory Harrison (Chandler) and more, this event is for fans to show their appreciation for the movie and to everyone involved. Proceeds will benefit the Hui O He`e Nalu non-profit organization that educates, coordinates, preserves, and provides assistance to facilitate the advancement of Hawaiian activities and culture.

In 1987, Universal Pictures took a big risk and produced one of the first big studio, feature length, surf movies, NORTH SHORE. Universal was underwhelmed by the initial box office numbers, but as time passed, its popularity grew to world wide cult classic status and today is one of the most beloved and quoted Hollywood surf movies of all time. NORTH SHORE provided many mainstream movie watchers their first look into the Hawaiian surf culture, localism, and the growing popularity of a new extreme style of surfing. The movie inspired hundreds of thousands of young people to become surfers, shapers, artists, or even just move to the coast to live the beach life. Fans have proudly made NORTH SHORE a part of their lives, exchanging favorite one liners, naming kids and pets after their favorite characters, and inspiring them to dream big and “Stay Loose” at the same time. Anniversary screening events like these are great opportunities for parents to share NORTH SHORE with their kids on the big screen, just like they experienced over three decades ago.

With a dynasty cast and quintessential 80’s soundtrack, NORTH SHORE featured main roles played by legendary surfers, Laird Hamilton, Gerry Lopez, Mark Occhilupo and Robbie Page, as well as cameo appearances by some of the biggest names in surfing, including the late Mark Foo and Derek Ho. Some, like Shaun Tompson, call Santa Barbara home today. John Philbin, who played Turtle, also called Santa Barbara home and is an alumni of UCSB.
