Francesco Moser – Bicycle Racing Legend
Francesco Moser is an Italian former road bicycle racer, born on June 19, 1951, in Trentino, Italy. He is considered one of the greatest cyclists in history and one of the most dominant cyclists of the 1970s and 1980s.
Moser began his professional career in 1973 and quickly made a name for himself as a talented time trialist and classic racer. In 1974, he won his first Italian national championship and went on to win it five more times throughout his career. He also won the World Championship in 1977 and the Giro d’Italia in 1984.
However, Moser is perhaps best known for his performance at the 1984 Hour Record, in which he set a new world record by cycling 51.151 kilometers in one hour. This record stood for nearly ten years and cemented Moser’s place in cycling history.
Moser retired from professional cycling in 1987 and went on to become a successful businessman, with interests in wine production and bicycle manufacturing. In addition to his cycling accomplishments, Moser was also named a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1984 and was inducted into the Giro d’Italia Hall of Fame in 2012.
