Distinguished pianist and UC Santa Barbara Music Faculty member, Paul Berkowitz, will delight the audience with an evening of classical piano at Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall, located on the UCSB campus. The concert is scheduled for Friday, April 12, 2024, at 7:30 pm.
Attendees will have the privilege of experiencing Berkowitz’s masterful interpretations of timeless works, featuring compositions by Joseph Haydn, Francis Poulenc, and Robert Schumann. The program will include Haydn’s “Variations in F minor”, Poulenc’s “Three Novelettes”, “Three Intermezzi”, “Presto in B flat”, and “Thème varié”, culminating with Schumann’s “Humoreske, Op. 20”.
Paul Berkowitz’s musical prowess has garnered international acclaim, particularly for his recordings of the complete Piano Sonatas of Schubert, which were hailed by the London Sunday Times as belonging “in the royal class of Schubert interpreters”. His recordings have been featured among the Records of the Year and his recording of Schumann’s Kreisleriana selected as the best by BBC Radio Record Review.
Berkowitz’s dedication to musical excellence extends beyond Schubert, as demonstrated by his acclaimed recordings of Schumann and Brahms Piano Music and his recent exploration of the piano works of Francis Poulenc. His latest recordings, including the Schubert Impromptus and Moments Musicaux, have been praised for their sparkling technique and clear sense of line by publications like The Guardian of London.
A native of Montreal, Canada, Berkowitz studied at McGill University and the Curtis Institute with renowned pianist Rudolf Serkin. He has graced prestigious venues worldwide and appeared as a soloist with major orchestras. Since joining the UC Santa Barbara music faculty in 1993, Berkowitz has continued to inspire students through his teaching and mentorship, with many of his students achieving success in competitions and embarking on thriving concert and academic careers.
Tickets for the concert are priced at $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors, military, and non-UCSB students with student ID, and free for UCSB students with student ID and children under 12.
