Weekend Description: We all carry a baseline of stress that lives in our bodies, shapes our brains, and dictates how we perceive and interact with the world. Whether through the minor traumas of daily modern life, or the major traumas of painful events, our brains and bodies need constant tuning and integrating. Without integration we are: unable to rest and restore; unable to heal; unable to accurately perceive safety and experience vulnerability; unable to learn and retain motor skills and new knowledge; less likely to healthfully respond to stress and interact with other humans. With integration we: learn better; maintain new motor skills more easily; move more efficiently and with greater variability; respond more accurately to stress, challenge, fear, and change; interact with others more responsively and with greater care, calm, and compassion; and most importantly build and sustain resilience to the future stress our lives guarantee. The gateway to this kind of mental, emotional, and physical resilience is the vagus nerve.
