Pianist John Scoville enjoys a musical life that blends his passions for performing, collaborating, and teaching. He is engaged in doctoral studies in collaborative piano performance at U.C. Santa Barbara, where he studies with Robert Koenig, assists the music department as an instrumental, vocal, and opera accompanist, and has also worked in the department of theater and dance. This work has included UCSB’s 2015 production of Joel Feigin’s Twelfth Night, winner of the National Opera Association’s Production Competition, the NOA’s 2016 Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition, produced in collaboration with UCSB, and winning performances in the Music Teacher National Association’s Young Artist California state competition and the Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation competition. John has been involved locally with Ensemble Theatre Company, Dos Pueblos Theatre Company, Opera Santa Barbara, and Ojai Youth Opera, maintains a private studio of piano students of all ages, and serves as organist-pianist at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the First Church of Christian Science in Goleta. His appearances at the American Institute of Musical Studies and San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto enabled him to work under song pianist Gary Matthewman and pianist-conductor Ted Taylor, and he has been fortunate enough to perform in master classes with flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, violinist Gil Shaham, and pianist Anne Epperson. John’s undergraduate piano study was completed summa cum laude at Portland State University under the guidance of Lisa Marsh and Doug Schneider.
