This annual Santa Barbara County Horticultural Society event features commercial growers and retailers. Designed to inspire us about what’s available for fall planting, this may include hot new plants or trusted oldies that deserve another look.
This year we have John Koegler from San Marcos Growers and Bruce Reed from Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
John has worked at SMG in a variety of positions since 1982. He switched to outside sales in 1985 and was on the road for more than 30 years. He recently started a new chapter at SMG, helping with sales, marketing and special projects.
For the plant forum, John will focus on a mix of plants that are looking particularly nice, newer items and current favorites.
Bruce Reed is an arborist and nurseryman born and raised in Santa Barbara County.
Bruce has been at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden nearly 20 years in a variety of positions and is now the Horticulturist overseeing nurseries, planting and propagation. He promotes sustainability practices by encouraging the use of California native plants in garden plantings.
For the forum, Bruce will display California native plants that SBBG is currently evaluating and trialing for release as named cultivars.
Gathering on a regular basis since 1880, the Santa Barbara County Horticultural Society meets at 7:00 PM generally on the first Wednesday of every month at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church on the corner of Foothill and La Cumbre Roads. Visitors are always welcome. There is a free plant exchange prior to the meeting, refreshments, and after the speaker a plant raffle.
