Dates for Board of Supervisors Housing Element Rezone Hearings Announced
szq-You are 100% on the money. Newsom's motto is: If it's open space, we shall build affordable housing that is not affordable. Most people envision Hong Kong as a huge, monolithic area that has a building on every square foot of buildable land. The fact is that Hong Kong, with some of the priciest homes and apartments in the entire world, is built out on only 20% of its 400 square miles, which is about 80% of the size of LA. The balance of Hong Kong's 380 square miles are open space and parkland! The more housing we build here, the more people and traffic we will have. Building a 500 unit apartment building to replace Paseo Nuevo is just another nail in the livability of Santa Barbara that will bring in more outsiders to our city and will further destroy downtown. Insanity! Remember in November!

SZQ - sadly, you're probably right, but not about SB. All this new development is being pushed on Goleta. But yeah, as long as there is money to be made off these ill-conceived and blanket mandates, towns like this will lose their small town vibe. Stop building.

No one here wants to build. Please, make an effort and read the comments. I'm strongly opposed to developing those open spaces, always have been. We don't need new buildings, we need to start using existing buildings and make them actually affordable. You're always so very wrong about this. Try and use the energy to actually understand what people are saying.

Thanks to Newsom and his supporters (they should know who they are) with this ill-conceived and ill-fated ‘build, baby build’ mentality. The areas around South Patterson, Cathedral Oaks near DP High, and Storke/Glen Annie?? Going to be a joke if they get their way, and it looks like they will. They’ve handcuffed (what is this a state run dictatorship?) the County completely.

Enjoy the way Santa Barbara looks now because it will never be the same.
Record-Breaking Beautify Goleta Earth Day Event
It's fantastic to get all of the trash out of public spaces, and all the volunteers and organizers deserve heaps of praise for these efforts. And speaking from personal experience, participating in these kinds of projects and seeing how beneficial they are from the inside is a real incentive to keep doing it and maybe even pick up the ball and organize other projects. The volunteers of today are the organizers of tomorrow. It's what strong communities do: organize and pool efforts to make our home a better place. Now if we'd only stop producing so much throwaway stuff in the first place! The old mantra "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" is ordered that way intentionally: First priority: Reduce!

BERNERD - Please don't. I'm sure if you saw a clean up effort like this in SB, you'd see just as much trash. Well, except all the storm debris that they hauled to our beach, but that's another story.

we're happy for you Sac that you are proud to support the Homeless Industrial Complex . Maybe you can get an invite to the luncheon celebrating the fact that they are able to continue raking in those tax dollars in these times of massive budget deficits. While conservatives are accused of "not believing in science" regarding pandemic and climate issues, progressives can be accused of not believing in common sense regarding the expectation of taxpayers to endlessly subsidize the unhoused while enabling a steady stream of asylum seekers needing shelter. This is causing significant angst in large cities pitting long term citizens in need verses recent arrivals-and no, I will not provide a link.

How is there so much trash in Goleta? Do people treat that City like a landfill? I'm going to start dumping my trash there too. Thanks City of Goleta for providing a free trash service.

Op-Ed: SB County Advances on Literacy Reform but California Teachers Union Tanks Statewide Bill
The Teacher's unions, once again, proves itself to be an enemy of the people. They are a garbage organization, who only serve the needs of their members. It's completely perverse that the public has to negotiate with their own civil servants. Their solution to poor performance is always the same, "Give us more money and control".

Hello porkrind Thank you for mentioning LIDAR surveys! I've been wanting to find it if there's ever been a LIDAR survey of our area to see any potential underground remnants of ancient Chumash villages. I know that most surface areas have been obliterated by the years, however there can still be underground evidence visible to LIDAR which would be interesting to explore further.
WAY BACK WHEN IN SB: The End of Our Silent Movie Days
The "Flying A" movie studio was in Santa Barbara from 1912 to about 1921, and made more than 1,000 movies (many of them shorts). You can learn more here: https://flyinga.filmandmedia.ucsb.edu/
Cuyama Colors
Interesting idea about the tall grasses. I was curious about that in the last pic of purple amid the tall grasses. Such a strange year in terms of timing and amount of sporadic intense rainfall so late into the season. Maybe someone with extensive understanding of "super bloom" factors will weigh in on what we might see in various areas. My uninformed impression is that even the top experts find it very challenging to predict even with all available data. The Fig.Mtn. ranger seems very well informed and especially experienced on that area. Is my sense correct the ranger sees high probability for more bloom to come there this season?

The UCSB Doc who doesn't work at UCSB as a doctor says "You think we can build or way into affordability for all," No one ever said we should build more units. I've explained this ad nauseum. You need to make an effort to understand what those you are arguing against are actually saying. Until then, I just can't anymore.

And here’s your problem mm, you’re not living in real life. Nor is Sack. You think we can build or way into affordability for all, and many folks who don’t like gridlock, environmental degradation, and overdevelopment completely disagree. Your and Newsom’s forced experiment is NOT going to work.
