Supervisor Laura Capps to Host Isla Vista Housing and Safety Listening Session for Tenants and Students in Aftermath of Recent Bluff Fatality
By "backyard" you mean a porch deck with a short railing. Those long houses are an effective shield for anything happening on a balcony perched over a death drop. Remove the buildings (nature will eventually) and create open space, cut back the cliff precipice to create slope (would've happened naturally if artificial caps and caissons weren't there), plant native vegetative barriers like nopal cactus. No one will try to climb over prickly pear!

I was struck by this: "the property presents a range of possibilities, from a hotel to a wellness center, a private school or a family compound." No mention of how the city or county might be interested in creating more housing? I thought they were quite concerned about that. A new state law allows property owned by churches to be used for affordable housing, and this seems like a good place to try implementing it.
Parking Fee Changes in Santa Barbara Undergo Deep Review by Finance Committee
Increasing parking cost is a CRAZY idea -- people need to park to spend money downtown and this will only discourage visiting downtown creating more empty store fronts, and less tax revenue. Now is a good time for the city to come up with a plan to greatly reduce headcount and expenses. . Work on being more efficient and reducing headcount instead.
Op-Ed: Development Gone Wrong in SB County Housing Element
I agree 100% with the poster’s position. How though can the County NOT abide by King Newsom’s housing mandate that’s been forced upon us? Lawsuit? If the vast majority of this development wave isn’t truly affordable, isn’t that counter to his stated plan? Perhaps then force things to go back to the drawing board and stall out this ridiculous experiment long enough that Newsom gets booted or moves in to this next position and saner heads prevail, because for Goleta especially…there’s no going back if this goes through. Am I dreaming?

I have family members that were victims of molestation by priest while attending there. I recall attending boy's choir performances there and it is a beautiful place, kind of spooky, especially after learning of what transpired there. I hope that whoever purchases the property renovates and uses it for something good and safe for all who enter.
Op-Ed: Development Gone Wrong in SB County Housing Element
It is beyond outrageous that our County employees, hired by our representatives roll over and play dead to objections to what our State is trying to do, is doing and is now about to do to the remaining open space of our Goleta Valley! Especially egregious is developer rep/planner-in-chief Plowman, appointed by our BOS representatives, all of them. OTOH, SB County argues for sustainability, clean air anti-greenhouse gases; OTOH, tomorrow that once Goleta “Good Land” will be rezoned to rid it of open space and greenery in favor of a sea of stucco and asphalt, with occasional tiny pocket parks. District 1 got rid of its “leader”, but unfortunately the new voice, Roy Lee, won’t be in office until January and we have no one standing up against the State and for sustainability, open space and the Good Land, the lungs, as Las Positas used to be called, for the entire central south county. …For shame, but it is s t i l l not quite too late.
Downtown Santa Barbara Continues Country Line Dancing Nights
Why does a city the size of Santa Barbara need full time council members? These city council folks need to land back here on earth and to take lessons in real life.

Maybe Hilda Maldonado wants to pickup the tab for it on the backs of our kids and their teachers like the Armory purchase - remember that? It’s a multimillion dollar storage yard for SBUSD vehicles now. I agree it would be sad if a rich ‘Cito type bought it for their personal second or third mansion property, which could happen. And you’re right, the buildings are special, and the site is outstanding. Maybe another private school will swoop in and buy it. It’ll be interesting.
Sole Local Restaurant at Fair & Expo to Support Local Teachers with Percentage of Sales
There was another local food vendor at the fair this year - at least last weekend. I wish I could remember the name! They had meatballs and wings.

The past is horrific and disturbingly sad. There are too many mentally and emotionally ill people in this world. The buildings are beautiful and architecturally significant. Let's hope it will become a much brighter and happier place that will be open to the public and become part of many accessible buildings here. It would sicken me to think this would go to an uber rich family as a private residence while so many are struggling to stay in Santa Barbara even with 2 and 3 jobs. There is more than enough unfounded entitlement in this town and it is only getting worse, keep the uberrich out of Mission Canyon, they are not welcome.

I’m thinking that place is absolutely haunted after what those Catholic priests did to innocent kids there, for decades. I’d say bulldoze it.

That sounds like a great idea. Will they do that? Meaning smaller, more efficient and fiscally-responsible government…I don’t think so. Too many ultra liberals throwing other peoples’ money around here to even hope for such a thing.

Santa Barbara Foresters Temporarily Relocate to Santa Barbara High School for 2024 Season
SBSURFERLIFE - I am too, but not sure it will be more comfortable. SBHS as old wooden bleachers on the 3rd base side and the "Home" bleachers are capable of holding maybe 50 or so spectators. It's pretty crammed in there. Again though, not knocking SBHS at all (I played there), but for a team with as much of a crowd as the Foresters, it's going to be a HUGE change. I think San Marcos high would have been better just as far as spectator comfort and access goes. It will be interesting, but fun to watch!

Full disclosure I love the carless streets, and I see the shop closures too, but I also find it a stretch to say auto traffic alone will improve the business environment. The rationale that I have heard is that people like to drive by a place first and then decide where to go and then decide where to park. If a person did not enjoy walking then I can see some sense in this, but it's a lot of driving around. It's hard to believe that there are that many folks like that. I think it's probably other larger reasons why many businesses struggle, but this might be a small contributor. The other reason I hear is parades, which bring a lot of traffic and business obviously in a short but reliable burst. I wonder how much effort CC has tried to find a way for parades and parklets to coexist? Maybe they've been working on it a lot and they just can't figure it out, or maybe they just haven't tried hard enough, idk. Seems solvable to me, but it would take a lot of cooperation.
