142 Drivers Cited in April for Violating Hands-Free Cell Phone Law
"Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold their phone or other electronic device while driving." - Not sure that's true. Holding a phone, without more, can't possibly be illegal. If so, then holding a drink, burger, paper map, sunglasses, anything, would also be illegal, or should be. "This includes talking, texting, using an app or even if stopped at a red light." - "or even" what? Or does it mean "even if stopped....?" I wonder because often times, when stopped at a long light, I'll pick up my phone to look to see if someone had been trying to contact me, the time, why it's beeping, etc. Is it truly illegal to pick up an object to look at while behind the wheel?

Correction..It would be political suicide to enforce an unenforceable law.

There are more SB /Goleta voters against than for SB9. It would be political suicide to enforce and unenforceable law.
Op-Ed: New battlegrounds emerge in California’s endless housing conflict
Not at all. But the so-called Builders' Remedy is due to the various cities and counties enacting so many rules and laws, on top of the myriad of CA rules and laws, that make building anything almost impossible.
UC’s President had a Plan to Deescalate Protests. How Did we get a Night of Violence at UCLA?
UCSB had its own pro-Palestinian encampment over the weekend and was able to peacefully protest without incident. It would be interesting to see the differences between UCSB's protest and UCLA or USC. Seems it comes down to how the Admin addressed the duration of the encampments maybe?
Op-Ed: New battlegrounds emerge in California’s endless housing conflict
The housing shortage was estimated to be 3-4 million units in 2017. Now, it's more like 2 to 2.5 million. (Source: google, various articles.) So, I guess it's better, but we still need millions more people to leave the state to have enough housing units.
Op-Ed: New battlegrounds emerge in California’s endless housing conflict
RUBAIYAT - why not? It's not at the expense of inland cities, it's in spite of the "exodus" from inland, mostly Republican, cities. Many from the right are leaving California for political and economic reasons. Despite those fleeing, we still have a HUGE influx of people moving here and wanting desirable locations on the coast. ALSO, where are our major cities, aside from Sacramento? SF, LA, San Diego, are all along the coast and attract people with the vast amount of jobs. It's not about being fair or whatever you seem to be concerned about, it's about reality. More people live on the coast and those people need housing so they can work in the towns they've moved to or already live in. Problem is, we do NOT need housing instead of open land. Put all this housing where it belongs - in empty buildings, malls, etc instead of building more hotels.
United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County to Vacate Canon Perdido Street
When we entered into the agreement with the Downtown Club part of the agreement was that we, United Boys & Girls Clubs, would receive annual support to help underwrite the cost of running the downtown facility. For over the past 2 years we have not received any funding as per the agreement and they, the owners of the Downtown Club, asked us to leave the facility. Because of these two facts our Board made the very difficult decision to vacate the facility. For the past 2 years the United Organization has funded that location 100% and this was not what we agreed to and it also takes financial resources away from the other clubs we operate in Lompoc, Buellton, Solvang, Goleta, Carpinteria, Westside of Santa Barbara and Camp Whittier. We are committed to making sure that any child that attends the Downtown Club will be provided free transportation to and from our Westside Club facility daily. We are going to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of our Downtown Club families. Please note that during the past 4 years that facility, along with all our other clubs, were open for schooling during the covid lockdown. We have been providing daily meals for all our members and no child has been turned away from any of our services due to his or her families economic situation. We are very proud of the work we do and will make sure we continue that level of service for ALL our clubs.

I’ll tell you why - and it’s a great question - it’s simply because SB Goleta voters are overall hardcore on the ‘affordable housing’ concept. Politicians like votes. They tend to go with that! Also, lawsuit = additional taxpayer dollars spent to fight the Governor. Not sure they wanna fight that battle politically. I’d sure like to think so, but the Sup’s are prob not going to.

I'm confused - who owns it? And they're supposed to be paying United to run the club? What? Can someone explain?
Op-Ed: New battlegrounds emerge in California’s endless housing conflict
I agree, but is it right for costal cities to grow at the expense of inland cities?
Op-Ed: New battlegrounds emerge in California’s endless housing conflict
Not from coastal California and surely not around here.

You seem to favor the Builders Remedy solution because it eliminates all the laws and red tape controlling construction.

Why aren't the Supervisors filing this action to challenge SB9 and stop the massive development of 2100 on one block of San Marcos. Furthermore why the attack on the conservation of farm land which is protected by state law.

What? Are you saying that more housing is the cause of higher rents and more costly homes? Did you read the article? That court ruling will be appealed, and the state legislature can easily correct the law.

In recent years hundreds of thousands have net emigrated from California- how do you explain the housing shortage?

That may be the intent, but "one size fits all" is just wrong. We are a desirable place to live, and we depend on tourism. That means that people will always want to live here, and our essential workers get squeezed out. All the new market-rate housing only exacerbates the situation by creating the need for more low-wage workers while the supply of affordable housing keeps going down. We have the right to evaluate the impacts of growth decisions locally and to act accordingly - as the judge correctly ruled since we are a charter city. Sadly, we have surrendered that right to state pols who apparently couldn't care less about local impacts (thanks to local surrogates with visions of Sacramento and Washington dancing in their heads.)
