Op-Ed: Project Disconnect descends upon Old Town
NIMBY-ism? Ha! Your looking to ruin Goleta Shmonk, is that it?
Goleta City Facilities Move to 100% Renewable Energy
There are very many dirty secrets to "clean energy"/ renewable energy. Just the amount of materials that go into the turbines, much of which beholds us to China. The quantities of cement and most metal parts are outrageous. New requirements in mining projects require further devastation to wild lands and ecosystems and the wild animals that live in such. Raptor and bat nesting sites have plumeted where turbine fields have gone. Further the use of batteries will lead to new contaminents in garbage dumps. s. By thinking we can impact the climate with our renewable dreams are just that, dreams.

Edhat readers can help the cause by going to the Old Town businesses that have the petition asking the City Council to stop the striping project and sign it. You only need to identify yourselves as an Old Town resident, business owner, employee or customer. Copies of the petition are available at CopyRight Printing, Larry's Auto, Lazy Eye Shop, Santa Barbara Auto Truck 4X4 Accessory Store, and Santa Cruz Market. You could also email the Mayor and Council Members or call City Hall and leave a message asking that the project be stopped. The petition will be presented at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 21st, during the Public Forum. The striping project is due to start a week later, unless the Council can be persuaded to change its mind. The least they could do is delay starting the project until their contractor finishes all the Project Connect work on the roundabouts, the replacement of the Hollister bridge over San Jose Creek, and the Ekwill - Fowler extensions. Why spend $1.1M dollars now to rip up and repave perfectly good asphalt on Hollister between Fairview and Kinman? This asphalt will easily last another 3 years until the Project Connect work is done, after which the striping "pilot project" could begin.

more NIMBY-ism on edhat. no surprise.
Op-Ed: Project Disconnect descends upon Old Town
I agree, a refresh of Old Town is definitely well overdue, but I think that there are better options than what has been decided, especially for cyclists. As for the traffic engineers and consultants that the City hired, I only trust them about as far as I can throw them at this point. The data that they presented at the meetings and town halls was full of flaws and was being bent to fit the narrative of the project. I do hope that I can also eat my words in the end, but I do not have a lot of confidence. The sidewalk project is a example of good intentions with poor planning and execution by the City; worked in some areas, but increased danger in most others.

Tom... As usual, your words ring true and you make excellent points. I appreciate that there are those who are still attempting to get the City Council to take their heads out from under their rocks (or location of your choice) and listen to the actual residents and business in Old Town. As an Old Town resident, I attended the meetings and town halls that were held in the leadup to this project, and I can say that the Board had their minds already made up from the get-go. Even their own data from the traffic studies was bent to look worse that it really was, in order to justify the need. When challenged on the safety issues that this project will bring to the residents of Old Town (mainly the speeding individuals you mentioned), it was waived off and one individual even stated that the narrow roads in the neighborhoods would make people drive slower (hahaha). I feel that, like the sidewalk project from a few years ago, the idea of revitalizing Old Town is in the right head-space, but lacks the actual thought and effort needed to make it successful. I have hopes that this new project will not end in disaster, but judging by all of the accidents and safety events that have happened just in the last week on Hollister due to increased traffic, I fear we are making this all more dangerous in the end.
Santa Barbara Unified School Board Implements Layoffs and Demotions to Save Nearly $2 Million
Pay cuts for administration seem appropriate, wont happen. Just like the CA. Governor and elected officials wont take a significant pay cut to help the states large deficit. Lead by example!!

Yeah, their plan will probably screw things up. Vote of ‘no confidence’ on this for me as well. We’d be better off keeping things as they are now than spending a ton of money under this ill-conceived plan. Between this and the disastrous Newsom ‘affordable housing’ mandate, I’d say goodbye to Goleta as we know it. Hello gridlock.
Op-Ed: Project Disconnect descends upon Old Town
A refresh of Old Town Goleta is well overdue. It's already slow going and dangerous for cyclists. I'll trust the traffic engineers over change-resistant locals. I'm happy to eat my words, but I'll reserve judgement until it's done.

Should hikers with sprains have to just tough it out and walk down from Inspiration point? Should people who get dehydrated just be left to figure it out on their own with no water?

Going to miss shopping in old town Goleta. In fact, I will probably not miss Goleta after a few thousand new homes are built.
Did California’s Massive COVID Homeless Shelter Program Work? A New Evaluation Probes the Results
ANON - That's impressive that you're able to conclude someone's abilities by just looking at them from a distance? Man oh man, if we could put that superpower to some use, just imagine the possibilities!
Op-Ed: City Council to Make a Decision on Parking Meters Wednesday
Fifteen-minute parking is only reasonable for parking spots right next to places where one can zip in to pick up an order, or drop off a package. Thirty minutes would be more useful.

Ms Gott says the Transit Occupancy Tax has not been raised in years. But it is a percentage of the hotel bill, so if hotel rates have gone up, the revenue from the TOT would also go up. I do agree that Santa Barbara might as well charge the same percentage as similar cities. But not more.

There's no "may help" about it. Increased solar activity leads directly to more auroral activity.
Carbajal Urges President to Uphold Law Regarding Delivery of Humanitarian Aid to Gaza
RUBAIYAT - since you're so concerned about civilians, what are your thoughts on the Israeli protesters that have been blocking and now ransacking aid trucks to prevent innocent children from getting food and clean water?

It seems to have become a popular lifestyle for some. The freedom. It deeply irks me when I see young able bodied people BEGGING in the United States of America when I see help wanted signs all over.
Op-Ed: City Council to Make a Decision on Parking Meters Wednesday
Your staff's proposed high cost parking fee system in the downtown-State Street area will ultimately and once and for all allow you to put a silver stake in its heart. Be careful what you vote for!

Oh no, these guys are great. Never seen anyone here argue otherwise. It’s not their fault a small minority of folks go in clueless, have a minor injury, hit the cell phone for a bailout, and put others at significant risk to come get them. It’s about personal responsibility. I’m sure someone will argue back.
