The state of State: What Would it Take to Rescue Santa Barbara’s State Street?
Tlook around at flourishing downtowns - Jackson hole, Santa Fe among many. The answer is out there, but we try to reinvent the wheel.
SB Unified & CSEA Make Significant Progress on Reclassification Process Language
This top down system does not work for the struggling students or the teachers, para educators and countless classified that keep computers working and many other fundamental tasks without which the system is an empty shell. Cuts are happening to staff that interacts directly with students. When it would actually be more effective to make cuts to the Superintendent salary and cabinet. One Superintendent I learned about from the Fresno area had his board let him go and then rehire him at a lower rate. His district was in trouble and by reducing his salary and benefits he gave his district and vulnerable students an extra 850,000. Now no one expects our current Superintendent to be so focused on the common good. But just basic reform , like stopping the current but somewhat hush hush practice of allowing the Superintendent and her cabinet to get the same raise as any teacher get. So if the teachers get a 15% raise so does Maldonado and her cabinette. This is just one of the many egregious double dipping practices at the top..which already has bloated salaries. Which the board found its courage and put a stop to this. And also ask the Superintendent and cabinet to put some skin in the game. They make 6x what a hard working teacher makes. for doing things that have little positive impact in tne classroom.
California Republicans want to Take Financial Aid from Protesters if they were Violent
If Biden had balls and a competent AG the Trump saga would have been settled a couple of years ago. He would be guilty or innocent and the 2024 election would be based on issues, rather than competing personality cults of aged demagogues
California Republicans want to Take Financial Aid from Protesters if they were Violent
I back and benefit meted greatly from the core Republican platform, and think Trump was mostly a good President and is a great ceo, but I don’t believe the election was stolen. Jan 6 and the aftermath is where I really get off the bus. I stand with Cheney, Pence, Romney, Brian Kemp, Nikki Haley, Cindy McKean, George Bush, and other decent people. I don’t support the NY show trial. But I do think paying off someone over questionable sex should disqualify just like it should have been for Bill Clinton, campaign violation or not. The gaggle of sycophants that Trump attracted is remarkable for their base criminality, carpetbaggery, charlatanism and general lack of morals. It will probably be horrible to see what is unleashed if they are given a chance. Look at how many are willing to get on their knees and just suck for him. Trump himself has more intellect than all of them combined. However, everyone knows he will turn on them and they will all turn on each other in a hot minute with the least bit of incitement. Don’t forget that the Nazis killed many of their own too. In 2 years America will be 250. Does anyone even care?

No on mentioned that our "new downtown" is the Funk Zone. Years ago this area didn't drawn tourists or residents. It was mostly businesses for collar workers and artists. Today new stores are going in there old ones are moving there. It's no wonder that State St. Is dying and the closure of State St. to cars is just helping speed up that process. I don't shop downtown anymore and I know a lot of people that avoid it. It is more enjoyable to go to Goleta and Upper State St. I don't need to worry about closed streets and can see the businesses.

Caruso has the right perspective and experience, his viewpoint seems valid. World class location that needs a real executable vision of what it can become. Done well, and coordinated with funk zone and waterfront, it can be a a key element of a strong urban core, great place to live and an attractive destination with lots of housing, services, hotel rooms, and attractions. I think of La rambla in Barcelona and Ipanema/Copacabana/Leblon in Rio as examples. People are going to be living and visiting downtown. Bringing developers like Caruso into the mix could be critical to building tvision of what could be in addition to 700-1500 new housing units and redeveloped city parking lots. In addition to existing entertainment, museums and expand the mix: *Chumash and other Museums *eclectic restaurants and clubs *mor ’me galleries, maker retail, food drink, *higher education centers for ucsb/sbcc/Westmont/Antioch/csuci/ef institute *medical, wellness, fitnes/gyms, *greenspace/gardens *grocery stores, supermarket *outdoor music stage *roller skating. There are many possibilities I’ve left out. Done in a way that builds on the entertainment, food/beverage, retail, beaches and parks that are already part of it. A world class memorable destination that can accommodate us residents as well as people/families/groups from nearby California towns and all over the world.

Good lord you just broke the internet. Writeoff a vacant building ? You realize you need actual income to have a reason to write off ANYTHING so no income from renting your building. No writeoff. I learned that in 5th grade at Hope school
Op-Ed: After Losing Population in Recent Years, California is Starting to Grow Again. Is that a Good Thing?
The growth in CA and the housing pressure is all in the urban areas. Almost 50% of the CA population has chosen to live in the LA metro area. I wonder how much $$$ it would take to incentivize 100,000 LA metro homeowners to sell and move to a more rural area in state or even anywhere out of state. I don't mean a cash payment, but maybe no state tax on sale profit

Lets agree that humans are crowding themselves into urban centers in ever larger numbers which comes at ever increasing densities. I see this and wonder if it is in the future here in the US https://www.businessinsider.com/craziest-microapartments-around-world-2016-9

San Francisco has a commercial vacancy tax that excludes downtown. So far only 74 landlords and lease holders have paid the tax. The question to ask though is why did they exclude their downtown Another question is what is to stop them from leasing cheaply on a month to month basis to a shell LLC?

It’s true - if an undocumented individual comes into an ER they’ll get taken care of. At taxpayers’ expense. Sane with a homeless person who has zero resources. How is Coast lying?

Makes sense to me.

As I said, forget Andy - this post is about growth in CA. It’s a Newsom-democrat driven problem as we speak, looking to grow and build our way out of an economic reality that is thus - it’s a desirable and therefore expensive place where we live, and always will be. Our governor and anyone voting for him are accountable.

Santa Barbara Public Market is probably one of the nosiest dining experiences that we have ever suffered and sadly the noise overshadows some of the decent food served there. Why go to lunch with someone if you cannot have a viable discussion over the roar?

Ah, yes, Andy Caldwell, professional "community organizer" for the past what, forty years?

But at least we all agree that it's just another idiotic thing from Andy.

COAST - "lifetime medical (FREE only if you are here ILLEGALLY until the age of 68-)" - Just. Stop. Lying. Honestly and sincerely, I can't find a single comment of yours here that doesn't contain at least one, major and easily verifiable lie. I mean, lying about this stuff on Parler with all your buddies is one thing, but coming here where there are well educated and reasonable people and trying to pass your outrageous lies is just getting exhausting. Please. Make an effort.
