State Street Ballet Presents Modified Model, Maintains Viability and Visibility

Avoiding a total shutdown, State Street Ballet’s Executive Director Rodney Gustafson has announced an amended 2020-2021 season to begin in October with incorporated COVID-19 restrictions. The innovative modification is entitled “The Studio Series” and will include performances originating from their home rehearsal space, the Gail Towbes Center of Dance in Santa Barbara. The program includes “Evenings,” “Nutcracker Suite,” and “Classical Evening,” along with a preview of their own version of “The Little Mermaid,” now scheduled to premiere onstage in the spring of 2022. The live-streamed performances will each accommodate a small, socially distanced audience.

Gustafson shares, “Our goal is to remain visible, valued, and relevant to our community and the greater performing arts culture during the pandemic. It is important for us to continue contributing joy and inspiration through the art we create in the absence of live experiences.”

In the short term, and as California state mandates allow, the spring of 2021 will bring State Street Ballet’s live performances back to The Lobero Theatre and outdoor venue, Godric Grove Amphitheater in Elings Park. The Company has a full contingent of Pro Track students (their upper level trainee program) and are maintaining a strong subset of their Company dancers.  The Virtual Summer Series is in full swing on the interactive platform, CYA.Live, and they are also participating in The Redlands Bowl online summer series (redlandsbowl.org). Their traditional touring season, including “The Nutcracker” performances, has been pushed forward to the 2021-22 Season.

State Street Ballet believes that dance is the heart of every culture. They seek to exemplify the value of this shared experience through innovative live performances, unique educational & outreach programs, and barrier-breaking collaborations.
