Located in the bright blue quonset hut on Santa Barbara Street in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone is a unique new retail and creative space.
The venue aptly named Zone Studioz is located downstairs from art studio 121 that stands the test of time, it’s been a funky creative space for over 30 years. Three new individual spaces have been created each offering a distinct retail experience. Jess Conti Leather Goods, Jules By the Sea Jewelry and Meadow Rose Photography and Art have banded together in an effort to survive the pandemic and its economic fallout.
Jess Conti offers a window into her leather work with a combined workshop and retail showroom. You can purchase all types of handmade leather bags and accessories as well as get a peek into where Jess makes her amazing products.
“A retail space in Santa Barbara was never on my radar ” says Jess, “The cost of rents here make it almost impossible for a small business like mine and I’ve found that collective retail spaces carry their own set of challenges. It’s got the feel of a collective space without actually being a collective. We all get to run our own businesses and feed off of each other’s customer base and energy. It’s really a win win situation and I couldn’t ask for better neighbors and friends in Jules and Meadow.”
Jules Kramer the maker and spirit behind Jules By the Sea offers her stunning handmade jewelry alongside a thoughtfully curated collection of Santa Barbara lifestyle gifts. Shop everything from one of a kind diamond jewelry crafted in the hues of the sea to the perfect beach blanket. Jules always has tools on hand to design, create and customize her pieces while you wait.
“I love the Funk Zone vibe and have been doing retail here for almost 5 years”, says Jules Kramer. It is full of unique art, gifts and most importantly, the incomparable Santa Barbara experience. We have taken that to the next level with “artist to table” experience customizing and crafting in person even during these unprecedented times.”
Husband and Wife team, Meadow Rose and Andy Lancaster offer a gallery and gift space featuring their photo art wood prints along with a new expanded area, welcoming Plum Goods Santa Barbara’s favorite gift shop for this holiday season. Additionally, they have a commercial photo studio in the back, where Meadow photographs product, fashion and lifestyle for local brands and small businesses.
“ I’m so thankful to have this space that brings all of our businesses together” says Meadow, “When COVID started it was all about just keeping them going. We gave up our living space for this location because it offered an opportunity to have a work space, retail gallery and my personal favorite, a new photo studio all in one spot. It keeps our 4 family businesses going, and in good Company with Jess and Jules. There’s a lot of production, hustle and good handmade vibes going down under one roof! It’s a special place and we are thinking of more ways to share it with you, like outdoor pop ups on the weekends, holiday receptions, and live music! In the meantime come see us any day, admire art and feel the creative zone vibes, support local and passionate people pulling through Corona, as we did the fires and floods together!”
In keeping with the funk zone tradition local artists have been creating one of a kind murals throughout the building’s hallway. Meadow has photographed these works and prints are available to help support the artists.
