The decedent who was fatally injured when he was struck by a northbound Amtrak passenger train yesterday, October 1, 2018, near Guadalupe has been identified as being 59-year-old Luis Cervantes, a local transient. Next of kin has been notified.
Preliminary indications are that it was an accidental death. A final cause and manner of death is pending toxicology and lab results.
At approximately 3:00 p.m. today, October 1, 2018, an adult male was on the railroad tracks near Pacheco and 12 Streets near Guadalupe when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train that was headed northbound.
Preliminary indications are that the train engineer observed the subject sitting on the train tracks and activated the train’s horn and braking system. The subject reportedly stood up, but did not get out of the way in time and was struck and fatally injured by the train.
The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is in the process of confirming the identity of the decedent and making a next of kin notification. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
