There are those who could legitimately argue though, that all habitual criminals are in fact mentally ill. How else would you account for their negative, harmful, antisocial behavior? They definitely aren’t mentally well people. But I do agree with the fact that not all mentally ill people are criminals.
What is the point of the continued lying about the closure institutions like Camarillo? It was the uber-Liberal ACLU who got them closed. And all those progressives who thought One Flew Over the CooCoo’s Nest was a documentary. Liberals need to step up and own this dramatic change that led now to generations of mentally ill on our streets who have overwhelmed many a California community, particularly those along the coast.
We have all the possible alternate care in the well-funded social saftey net already in place. The missing link iare those who refuse to improve their lives and utilize these available care options, mainly the street addicts. These are the small part of the remaining “homeless” population that do need to be returned to lockdown places like Camarillo used to offer. We the people in the state of California built places like Camarillo, which in fact was a gorgeous sprawling campus. We had the will then, we have the money now because tax money has been raised for this very purpose. So where is the political will in this Democrat super-majority state and why do they keep sabotaging this valid option so nothing gets done? Can a Democrat please explain this – why are they benefiting by keeping the mentally ill out of places like Camarillo used to provide.
LINA24 – Criminals who know the difference between “right and wrong” are not mentally ill. They are simply making bad decisions, usually with full knowledge of the consequences. But, even if all “habitual criminals” are mentally ill, are you suggesting we don’t imprison them or penalize them in some way for their crimes?
We are long past trying to fix street addicts and roving bands of vicious travelers. They don’t want to be fixed We must now fix our own communities which have been ravaged by these various forms of intractable street vagrants. Different problem, different focus and very different solutions. Too much focus in the past trying to “save” each errant individual; now we have to save ourselves.
Visit the Reagan Museum in Thousand Oakes. You definitely need a revised history lesson about this extraordinary man. No, Reagan was anything but an “idiot”, nor was he subsequently zombied after he was shot. In his own words at the new hologram exhibit, it will astound you to hear his own prescient words. His positive legacy is deep and rich. Thank goodness voters were wise enough to elect him at a time when this country and the world was going off its rails.
Old blokes on-the-street are sometimes “icky” but young transients are more dangerous. They have the strength of youth and many have the violence-level of gang members and the ethics of a snake oil selling, stump-jumping politician.
A similar thing happened last week at the Habit on Milpas, but I saw no reports on online news media. I heard that it was a frightening incident (that had happened before). This transient person also caused some property damage- a hole in the ceiling.
I heard nothing about anyone who is mentally ill in this situation, to me this is a criminal action terrorizing others intimidating to get what you want. Criminals and people who are mentally ill are different yet I know what you mean some people use the mentally ill rap as an excuse for someones behavior. This needs to stop criminals who break the law need to be punished the mentally ill need help.
Now that downtown State Street foot traffic dried up, storefronts closed, and very few continue to offer handouts, this grifter population moved into new turf – Upper State.
Happy Thanksgiving. People who sit in front of their computers or ipads and speculate about the life circumstances of those whom they glibly call “transients” for want of a more offensive term are pretty offensive themselves. Every society has a permanent problem with mental health problems. In older days the “village idiot” was just part of the townscape. For decades our ancestors created institutional solutions such as “insane asylums” and mental health hospitals. We closed these down by and large because they are expensive and people complained of abuses in them. So a portion of our population is left free to roam and make do, sleeping in freeway right of ways and under benches and self-medicating and unable to deal with their emotional or intellectual handicaps. Somehow those who observe these out of normal behaviors escape responsibility by saying that these folks should be just locked up and that they are just willfully behaving badly. So easy. We need to reinstitute locked care mental health housing as well as alternate street care and shelter. It is just a fact of humanity that some of our own need this just to manage their lives.
RHS – nice attempt at a “guilt trip.” But, you’ve classified all homeless as needing mental care. Some, usually the younger, more aggressive and violent panhandlers, are homeless by choice and simply have addiction issues or “motivational” problems. Locking up the mentally ill won’t fix the problem in its entirety.
658- No, of course not. They should be incarcerated. But perhaps if they were treated for it while incarcerated it could help reduce recidivism. Because the fact that they know the difference between right and wrong, and know that it will end badly – yet still do it, proves that they don’t have self control and don’t care about themselves or others, which indicates pretty severe mental illness.
I have recently decided to call the criminal element of the Homeless transients because they really don’t deserve to be called Homeless. I will continue to call Homeless people Homeless, Mentally Ill 5150’s, Sex offenders Saw Dust. These Transient Criminals who terrorize people in order to intimidate and steal are not deserving of being called anything but what they are. I really don’t give a POOP what you call me I’m sure I have been called worse I am more Defensive than Offensive as I don’t bend over and let idiots kick me in the Hiney…Maybe instead of wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to people you dislike you can leave your basement go out and find some of these poor souls people call transients take them to your home and give them a Happy Thanks giving I’m pretty sure they will want more take it and you won’t be saying Happy Holidays next week, Good Day.
One has to be nuts to get into retail these days. As if competition from Amazon, Starbucks, and Walmart isn’t enough. With little viable recourse, these shop owners and their employees also have to deal with out of control “customers”. Ugh.
And, that’s why I keep a spray bottle handy. A little spray in the face / eyes, will usually change things. And, the bonus, add a little vinegar to that spray bottle! NOT joking.
And, btw…. you can blame Reagan for closing all the State run Mental Institutions, like the one in Camarillo.
Yes, but 15 years ago a vagrant murdered a senior (who brought flowers to his wife every day as I remember) at McDonalds. There has already been innocent people killed by this attraction of ‘homeless’ and still it gets worse.
D8VANILLA – you seriously walk around with a spray bottle in case someone harasses you? I’m not sure whether to laugh or feel sad that you feel the need to do this.
Here we go again. Any chance Cathy Murrillo and the rest of the board are reading this? I keep saying it again and again but we are due for something serious. It’s going to take an innocent person being killed until half this town realizes we have a serious problem on our hands. It’s gotten worse and any solution that does not permanently remove the mentally ill off our streets should not be acceptable. And as far as the young gutter punks, Jail or a one way ticket back to Seattle/SF/Portland.
The ACLU “freed” the mentally unstable out of “institutions…”
We can all agree that Reagan was an idiot even before he was shot dead and subsequently zombied, However, the mental hospital closure was a bipartisan act of the legislature to limit the judiciary’s powers of involuntary commitment in California. As President, Reagan stopped the federal funding of community mental-health centers. All of this was a long time ago. Today the problem with “mental illness” is that we are too tight-fisted to deal with the fallout. It’s not the fault of the ACLU or the city councils, it’s County Supervisors and the Legislature. If you don’t want wierdos on the streets, you have to pay.
Its been almost 50 years since the state made the closures you folks are whining about. 50 years! In that time our debt has skyrocketed, our schools have slumped and our taxes have risen on everything while our quality of life has become dismal. Want to blame some one for the problems? If you’re over 55 look in the mirror and then point your fingers at your fellow Baby Boomers. You folks are the single worst generation in American history. The ONLY one to leave their children worse off then they and the only one to inherit the wealth and the prosperity never before seen in human history. Selfish and greedy. Yup. The hippies became Yuppies and they stole every last penny for themselves. Literally robbing their great grand kids to pay for their excesses and comforts. All without sacrificing a thing! Just look at the cost of living today vs. the 1970’s – College? Healthcare? Housing? The list goes on and on and on. The Boomers are by far the worst generation in American history. And to make matters worse, they gave us Clinton, Bush and Trump! Ughhh…. Debt and selfishness beyond any measure. Yup, that’s your legacy folks.
Your whining too it’s the Baby Boomers fault whine whine whine….I suppose your perfect oh you must be your posting here waawaawaa
lina24 I have to disagree. Not caring about yourself or others and being impulsive in your criminal behavior is NOT a “severe mental illness,” it’s just being a crappy person. People commit crimes for so many, many different reasons, it’s really naive and silly to lump all of them, from murderers to check forgers, in the same class and call them all “severely mentally ill.” Even worse, is to lump them in the same class as people with TRUE mental disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, for example. There is a reason that criminals and the mentally ill have always been treated differently, it’s because, like I said, some people are just jerks and don’t care about their decisions, and others have no choice or even the ability to begin to care.
