The American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara hosted their Design Awards Gala on December 7th at the University Club, which honored the achievements of local architects and architecture. The annual event provided a showcase of our members’ contribution to the architectural legacy of Santa Barbara and the value of well-designed architecture to every member of our community. Each entry was judged for its Inspiration, Creative Problem Solving, Environmental Sensitivity and Social Response.
This year’s AIA Santa Barbara Design Awards jury included architects Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, Takashi Yanai, FAIA, and Douglas Ewing, FAIA, NCARB, WBFF. The following firms were honored for their distinction in the Santa Barbara community within their respective categories.

Lutah Maria Riggs Presidents Award
In light of the tragic events of the Thomas Fire and resulting debris flow the 2018 Lutah Maria Riggs President Award is being conveyed this year for outstanding community service. In doing so AIA Santa Barbara recognizes the community’s extensive response to assist those effected by this unprecedented disaster. The American Institute of Architects, Santa Barbara is proud to have selected Carl Palmer, whose leadership, compassion and dedication have contributed significantly to community healing and recovery in the wake of the catastrophe. Carl is the founder of LegacyWorks Group and has led innovative community impact initiatives for the past 17 years. The Lutah Maria Riggs award was presented by the American Riviera Bank.

For the first time AIA Santa Barbara awarded student design awards to architectural drafting and design students at SB City College for their classroom project designing Accessory Dwelling Units.
