Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Highway 154 where one vehicle rolled over.
At 2:45 p.m., Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded 3.5 miles north of Highway 101 on Highway 154. They found a two-door Mini Cooper that was traveling westbound and a Toyota Tacoma traveling eastbound had collided head-on.
Following the collision, the Tacoma had rolled onto its roof and both vehicles sustained major damage, said SBCFD Public Information Officer Mike Eliason.
The Tacoma had a male driver and female passenger inside. Both were uninjured and managed to self-extricate before firefighters arrived. The male driver of the Mini Cooper suffered minor to moderate leg injuries and was transported to the hospital.
The westbound lane of Highwa 154 is completely blocked with a lot of backed up traffic.
California Highway Patrol is investigating this incident.

Fire departmenrt, Medics, CHP…Responding.
One mile and a half up from San Antonio Creek, one patient, vehicle fire is out, everyone else out of the vehicles…
Lucky to be alive.
It is unreal how absorbed drivers get with everything BUT DRIVING SAFELY. Prior to 5 years ago, you rarely hear of these types of accidents. now with smart phone use, you almost hear it daily. The police really need to wrap their heads around solutions to this problem. Heavy handed enforcement is obviously very necessary.
A true testimony to better / safer engineered vehicles.
Maybe a big neon sign before heading up that says hey assholes, don’t tail gate, don’t text, don’t swerve over the yellow line you are risking lives and if your going to go under the speed limit then please just stay home. Obviously the city would never put such a sign but it’s fun to imagine what it could say.
If you need proof that Google Maps directions etc are impacting the 154 just go up to the northern junction with 101 and 154 and watch how almost every car now gets off the southbound 101 and takes 154. The kind of person who wants to get to SB quicker is NOT who should be speeding on that rural road. And as for drivers who drive too slow being a hazard, I drive the 154 towing a horse trailer, going the speed limit, and using turn-outs. NOT obeying the speed law to aggravate other people, but to be safe.
You’re against people going a bit UNDER the speed limit on the most dangerous highway in Santa Barbara?? That’s crazy.
With most people traveling distance using Google Maps, Highway 154 has taken on more traffic as it is the shorter route (by about 5 minutes).
I commuted to SB on the pass for 16 years. I saw many people holding their phones at the top of their steering wheel so they could text while driving. It definitely got worse as wine tasting and the casino increased. Slower traffic needs to keep right, and those that want to pass need to wait until it is legal to do so.
I saw at least 3 head on collisions with dead bodies inside, and barely missed hitting deer myself. Eventually, idiot tourists in an Escape camper van smashed into a car waiting to turn left and sent it into my wife’s path. She wasn’t seriously injured, but her car was totaled, and it was at least 6 weeks before she would drive the pass again. Commuting regularly on the 154 finally became out of the question after that.
The Tacoma is a truck, Duck. People use trucks for all variety of things, work, home improvement, weekend sports, towing trailers. Why do people think they need to judge other’s choices rather than just managing their own lives.
The mini is amazing, the passenger cabin completely intact after being hit by a vehicle twice the weight.
Luvaduck, many SUVs are no more expensive than regular sedans. I absolutely would rather – and do – drive an SUV for safety’s sake. I have a child and do a lot of driving with her. I would rather her be surrounded by a “tank” than a tin can, any day of the week. Mind your own car business.
Yeah, Luvaduck, tell us how SUVs are now a male issue? Some people…
Nature Boy, I doubt he’s talking about “a bit” under the speed limit. I drive 154 several times a week for years now. And yes, the slow pokes who drive like frightened geriatrics do cause serious hazards. There are numerous blind curves, and I can’t tell you how many times myself and others have been traveling at a normal rate of speed, only to come around a curve and have to SLAM on our breaks because someone is going way too slow. It’s dangerous. Usually, these are the same people that speed up to 70mph once they hit the passing lanes, causing others to have to accelerate to even highers speeds in order to pass (and then, inevitably, the slow poke goes back down to 40mph). It creates a cluster, and absolutely IS dangerous.
If you have to get really busy (Slam) on your breaks maybe you should try decaf.
