On Thursday, 01/31/2019, the Santa Maria Police Department conducted a “Minor Decoy” operation throughout the City of Santa Maria. The program is designed to reduce youth access to alcoholic beverages. These types of operations are conducted by local law enforcement throughout the state.
During the “Minor Decoy” operation a minor decoy, under the age of 21, attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages, under the direct supervision of SMPD undercover officers. The decoy entered four different “on-sale establishments.” All of the establishments were restaurants. The servers of two of the establishments sold alcohol to the seventeen year-old decoy. One server at the Saigon Cuisine was cited and two from Tacos El Tizon. Two cites were issued at Tacos El Tizon because one server checked for identification and approved the sale of alcohol to be made by a different server. All three subjects were cited and released at the scene.
These programs are intended to reduce the availability of alcoholic beverages to minors; statistics show that teens have a greater rate of drunken driving crashes than adults.
Funding for these programs are provided by the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) by A.P.P. (Alcohol Policing Partnerships) grant which was awarded to the Santa Maria Police Department in conjunction with the Guadalupe Police Department for these types of operations.
They should enforce the alcohol law that states no alcohol to be sold to inebriated or alcoholic customers- The CA ABC has a law on the books against that, but they (liquor stores, gas stations and Pacific Beverage) makes too much money sell cheap vodka and cheap 40’s off street transients (bums).
wouldn’t this be called entrapment?
seems a bit extreme…and a massive waste of resources. are they really this bored??? it’s a beer. we all know that if a 17yo wants a beer, they will get it very easily.
