Sheriff’s Office Responds to Beached Sailboat

Source: Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office

At approximately 10:30 am on Feb. 16, Deputies responded to the area of Dump Rd. near the Seal Rookery to investigate a report of a beached sailboat.

Pursuant to section 518 of the Harbors and Navigation Code the Sheriff’s Office has jurisdiction over the beach where the boat had washed ashore and is the agency responsible for the cleanup and removal of the boat. Beacon West Energy Group, however, contracted with a vessel removal service to remove the boat to preserve the pier and the company’s assets. Members of the United States Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment, Santa Barbara also responded and mitigated fuel and other hazardous waste concerns on the vessel.

A quick response by the Sheriff’s Office, Beacon West Energy Group, the United States Coast Guard and Seal Watch members ensured a timely and effective coordinated response to this incident which helped preserve the beach and the nearby seal population.
