Earlier this week we received several emails about thick braids of hair found all over Santa Barbara. Ed thought this was a joke and decided not to post it. Well, turns out it might not be.
Our friend John Palminteri at KEYT received similar reports and the community shared their encounters with these hair displays.
Currently far our readers have sent in reports of these hair bundles seen near the Mesa Shopping Center, the parking lot of the CVS Pharmacy on Carrillo, and San Andres.
So, what’s it for? Perhaps it really is a joke or social commentary. Or maybe there’s a wig truck traveling all over town with their tailgate open. It’s hard to tell, but locals are very concerned about their owner or owners.

It really did look like they fell out of or off of a car. I thought the girls getting them in the street were picking them up for that reason. Except they were everywhere on Carrillo hill and the Mesa area. I saw the news about them last night and they never mentioned it was human hair, more like horse tails but less coarse. I would love to hear the real story because like someone else stated It is really Creepy!
Police investigate crime. Where is the crime, except in someone’s fear mongered imagination?
When my husband mentioned this hair mystery I immediately thought he was referring to some of my observations of several random piles of long, dark, brown hair strewn on Westwood, Sage Hill Rd, and Fellowship Rd, (Alta Mesa) I noticed awhile back on my dog walks. These were not neat, purposefully bundled, uniform hair packages as recently found in the area, but pretty big clumps, that looked like handfuls of long brown hair. The hair looked like human, or possibly horse tail hair. I also thought that it was maybe something naturally falling from trees, or tree bark. I found it odd and noted several clumps over the course of about a month. These observations were made about 2 or 3 months ago. At the time I thought someone did major brush cleaning and threw hair in the garbage and it made it to the street. It looked like long coarse brown hair and was the amount of hefty handfuls.
what would the police investigate? littering?
it looks like how they cut hair for “locks of love” where you donated your hair for wigs for cancer patients.
The casino has adopted a new, yet traditional, method of dealing with scofflaws; albeit not as severe as in previous centuries.
Looks like a serial killer lost his trophies . ( kidding )
Perhaps it’s what left of some humans. Drug Cartel message to people getting out of line?
Now that our brave City Leaders have banned straws and baggies – let’s ask them to take up the ban against discarded hair. My wife’s hair clogs the shower drain every week – think what damage these massive locks of destruction could do if one got stuck in a storm drain.
BAN THE HAIR NOW!
This is truly a hair raising mystery.
Just sayin….
Please, let’s all pick these up and keep them out of the storm drains, which is where they will end up. If they are not human hair or other biodegradable material, they are plastic and will travel out to the ocean where they will potentially harm thousands of fishes and other sea life.
This could well be from someone trying to get attention. Like a tagger. Let’s just dispose of the trash.
Horse hair would not be mistaken for human hair. Possibly these are synthetic for hair extensions, or real but not likely horse hair from manes or tails.
LOL!!! I hadn’t thought about the hair in the sink and shower drains! Ban The Hair Now!
