The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that they are the recipient of a grant from @vitaminangels to provide a six-month supply of prenatal vitamins to pregnant inmates being released from Santa Barbara County Jail. Vitamin Angels helps at-risk populations in need – specifically pregnant women, new mothers, and children under five – gain access to life changing vitamins and minerals.
Vitamin Angels is a global charity that is based here in Santa Barbara and Bridget Quanstrom, Program Manager, and Claire Jacobs, Logistics Coordinator, delivered the vitamins to the SBSO Headquarters in person. SBSO Custody Operations is so grateful for the opportunity to provide this valuable resource to this vulnerable population in our community.

Vitamin Angels’ time would be better spent doling out contraceptives, particularly to women and men who have a history of crime and incarceration.
@7:39 I totally agree with you. But, since they are already pregnant I’m happy the babies will be getting their vitamins, maybe they won’t come out as dumb as their parents 🙂
Vitamin pills are not magic pills. They cannot replace proper nutrition. Vitamins simply act as catalysts

Most of the time yes, but a pregnant woman getting folate/folic acid via vitamin is proven to reduce birth defects.
They only work if you are deficient .. Like the added demands of pregnancy, Malabsorption, poor diet .
About sterilizing, in the 1950s a woman with a couple kids was busted for marijuana and the judge ordered her to be “sterilized”. I have no idea how that turned out but it was front page news in the News-Press.
Not helpful to oversell the value of folate acid in vitamin pills and the prevention of spina bifida since .. “the neural tube closes early in embryonic development (28 days after conception), therefore a woman should begin folic acid supplementation ideally prior to becoming pregnant.” … Hot tub use causing temperature elevation during very early pregnancy is also linked to spina bifida according to Mayo Clinic. Pays to do more research on the topic rather than dutifully endorsing the value of distributing a symbolic “magic pill”.
This certainly a compassionate thing to do. Hopefully the prospective mothers-to-be can turn their lives around because they are not just living for themselves anymore.
What good would “handing out contraceptives” to women in jail do? My doctor had me taking the prenatal vitamins well over 50 years ago. If it helps prevent birth defects it’s well worth taking them.
Unfortunately, in women’s prisons, it was a fairly common practice in the last few decades (especially the private prisons) to administer Depo-Provera, an injectable progesterone hormonal birth control method that lasts up to 3 months and gives a large portion of women severe side affects (due to the high levels of progesterone) such as depression, hair loss, and irregular menstrual bleeding. This prevented the sexual assaults on the prisoners by the male guards from being proven by the inmates becoming pregnant.
