Tomorrow is June 21 – the summer solstice and the day with the most light – California Central Coast residents will join thousands of advocates from across the world to participate in The Longest Day. Participants will choose an activity of their choice –playing bridge, swimming, knitting and more – to raise funds and awareness to advance Alzheimer’s Association care, support, and research programs.
Below is a list of The Longest Day events in the tri-counties area:
- June 1-30: BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse nationwide: donate at least $1 to the Alzheimer’s Association, get a voucher for a free Pizookie on the next visit
- June 21: BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse nationwide: donations up to $25,000 will be matched
- June 21: Pomerantz Bowl to Remember, Simi Valley
- June 21: Teresa Valko (Board Chair for the Chapter), On Board for Change
- June 21: Lazertag Extreme, Simi Valley
- June 21: Poker Night in Westlake Village, hosted by O’Gara Coach Westlake
- June 22: RiseUp Fitness Santa Barbara Donation Class
- June 22: Craig Brown Memorial Golf Tournament at the Pismo Beach Golf Course
- June 26: BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse atThe Esplanade in Oxnard — 20% Giveback
- June 27: BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Westlake Village — 20% Giveback

In California alone, there are more than 670,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than 1.6 million family members and friends providing care. At the local level, in Santa Barbara County, more than 8,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s; in Ventura County, more than 14,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s; and in San Luis Obispo County, more than 6,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s — more than 28,000 in the California Central Coast.
Key facts about Alzheimer’s include:
- Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.
- It is the third-leading cause of death in California.
- More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease.
- More than 16 million family and friends provide unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias in the United States.
- Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s.
- In 2019, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the United States an estimated $290 billion. This number is expected to rise to $1.1 trillion by 2050.
