Public Safety Radio Communications Improved Along Coastline

Source: City of Santa Barbara

The Public Works Department Electronic Maintenance work group has recently completed a project to improve radio communications along the coastline between Leadbetter and Hendry’s Beaches. There has been historic communication issues in this area due to the large cliffs, which has directly impacted the Fire Department.

Public Works staff, in conjunction with the City Attorney’s Office, came up with a collaborative solution using a joint use agreement, allowing the City to install a radio receiver on Coast Guard property at the end of Meigs Road. This location overlooks the beach and provides a line of sight that significantly improves radio communications below the cliffs.

Now complete, this project will improve radio communications along the beach and cliffs within Santa Barbara and allow for better response to public safety incidents along this stretch of coastline.

  1. Thank goodness radios can communicate if there’s an emergency. Too bad we can’t jam cell phone signals on that beach. If I see and hear one more person blah blah blahing on his/her cell phone on the beach . . . Whatever happened to enjoying nature and keeping one’s one-sided conversations to one’s self?
