A DNA test confirmed the remains found in the wreckage of a secluded vehicle collision were that of a Lompoc man missing since 2017.
Zacharey Taylor Wilks, then 27-years-old, disappeared on May 24, 2017, while en route to Las Vegas from Lompoc. He was driving a black 1997 Honda Civic and did not make it to his destination.
On October 25, 2019, Wilks vehicle was recovered off Highway 166 in Kern County. The vehicle appeared to be involved in a traffic collision causing major damage and ended up in the dense brush off of the side of the roadway, reports the Lompoc Police Department.
Last week, a family member confirmed a positive DNA result concluded that Wilks had died near the scene of the car wreckage.
“We don’t know how or exactly when he died. There will be a lot of assumptions, but no one knows,” wrote Elizabeth Wilks on a dedicated Facebook group page. “Our family is broken we never wanted this day to come. As always love and respect each other. Keep his memory alive in your hearts, and may he rest in peace knowing he was loved.”
Memorial service plans are currently pending.
