There are now 13 cases of COVID-19 in Ventura County. 1 was confirmed by the CDC and 12 were presumptive. As of today, we will not be reporting presumptive positive cases. They will be counted as positive cases. The CDC lab will no longer be providing confirmation. The local lab will provide the final results.
Cases include travel related, community transmission, person to person and those under investigation.
Travel related: Means the person was exposed while traveling.
Community transmission: Means there is no known point of exposure.
Person to person: Means someone was exposed by someone they are close to that was already positive. In this case it was the spouse of someone that already tested posted.
Under investigation means they are determining if the case falls under the three previous categories.

Ventura County Public Health has announced two new presumptive positive COVID-19 cases: 1) The first case is a person who had traveled from Egypt. The person has had limited public contact and remains under home quarantine. 2) The second case is an 8-year-old child. The child was treated multiple times over the past month for an underlying condition. The child has not attended school for more than 14 days. The child is now being treated at a hospital outside of Ventura County. At this time, the Ventura County Public Health Lab has conducted 112 COVID-19 tests. There is 1 positive case and 4 presumptive positive cases pending confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Based on available evidence, children do not appear to be at higher risk for COVID-19 than adults. The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar in children and adults. However, children with confirmed COVID-19 have generally presented with mild symptoms. Reported symptoms include cold-like symptoms, such as fever and cough. Children with underlying medical conditions and special healthcare needs may be at a higher risk for severe illness. Ventura County Public Health is encouraging all community members who are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 to take actions to reduce their risk. Older adults, individuals with compromised immune systems, and individuals who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer or lung disease are encouraged to practice social distancing. A second travel related COVID-19 case has been reported in Ventura County. The traveler returned from a trip to Italy, became symptomatic and sought medical attention. The testing was completed by a health care provider in Los Angeles County. The traveler is under home quarantine in Ventura County. The test is presumptive until it is confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At this time, the Ventura County Public Health Lab has conducted 77 COVID-19 tests. There is 1 positive, travel related, case of COVID-19 in Ventura County and now 1 presumptive positive travel related case. There are 25 travelers on home quarantine. There are no confirmed cases of person-to-person transmission in Ventura County.
Ventura County Public Health is encouraging all community members who are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 to take actions to reduce their risk. Older adults, individuals with compromised immune systems, and individuals who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer or lung disease are encouraged to practice social distancing. Such individuals are encouraged to avoid crowded settings, avoid people who are sick and avoid hugging or shaking hands.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that the only presumptive positive COVID19 case in Ventura County is positive. The patient remains in home quarantine. There have been 34 people tested, 1 positive case and 33 negative results. There are 22 travelers, with no symptoms, on home quarantine and 0 travelers at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu.
There have been no cases of person-to-person transmission in the County of Ventura. The California Department of Public Health is not recommending the cancellation of public events. The County of Ventura Public Health Department continues to encourage community members to prepare for social distancing.

One presumptive positive case of the novel coronavirus has been confirmed by the Ventura County Public Health Lab. Secondary confirmation is pending from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The patient had traveled on the Grand Princess Cruise Ship from San Francisco to Mexico. The patient returned to the port of entry in San Francisco on February 21, 2020. This was the same ship on which an elderly adult traveled and later died, in Placer County, after testing positive for COVID-19. The cruise destination was not on the list of at-risk destinations so the travelers that disembarked the ship on February 21, 2020 were not under travel restrictions or health checks upon return.
Once Princess Cruises learned of the passenger’s death, they began notifications to passengers. The California Department of Public Health notified Ventura County Public Health on March 4, 2020, at 7:40 pm that there were six Ventura County residents that had traveled on the cruise. Ventura County Public Health quickly began contacting cruise travelers on the same evening. One of the six travelers had already been in contact with their primary doctor. The primary care doctor had requested that the traveler be tested for COVID-19. In an abundance of caution, the doctor had the patient remain in their vehicle during a curbside specimen drop off. This was requested to limit any possible exposure. The Ventura County Public Health Lab, one of eleven labs in the state able to conduct testing, confirmed preliminary positive results on March 5, 2020. Results are pending from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The patient was not feeling well upon return from the cruise and remained home resting. The patient only left their home to seek medical attention. Ventura County Public Health is working with the California Department of Public Health to provide notifications to anyone who may have been in contact with the patient while seeking medical attention or during transit to Ventura County from San Francisco. The patient is currently under home quarantine with mild symptoms. The patient’s spouse was also on the cruise but has no symptoms. The spouse also remains under home quarantine.
Public Health has contacted the four remaining passengers. One passenger is symptomatic and being tested at this time. The remaining three have no symptoms.
“There is no evidence of community transmission in Ventura County. This is a travel-related case. We appreciate our lab and nurses for quickly responding. Their swift action helped limit community exposure,” said Ventura County Public Health Officer, Doctor Robert Levin. “We understand the concern this new virus is causing. The risk to the public from COVID-19 remains low. Community members are encouraged to take the same steps they would take to help prevent colds and the flu. Preparing for social distancing is still recommended.”
According to the California Department of Public Health, as of March 5, 2020, there are a total of 60 positive cases in California: 24 travel-related cases and 19 other confirmed cases. This is the first positive case, pending CDC confirmation, in Ventura County.
As of March 6, 2020, there have been 8 people tested, 7 negative results, 2 pending result, 25 travelers on home quarantine, and 1 traveler under quarantine with no symptoms at Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu.
Symptoms of COVID-19 are like the flu, which include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Symptoms may appear in as few as 2 days or up to 14 days after exposure. If you are presenting symptoms of COVID-19 and may have had contact with a person with COVID-19 or had recent international travel please contact your health care provider. Before seeking medical care, consult with your provider first to prevent possible transmission in the health care setting.
Recommendations for the Public Take these precautions to stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like COVID-19:
- Wash hands with soap and water and rub for at least 20 seconds
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
- Stay home if you are sick
- Get a flu shot to protect yourself and others from flu, which has similar symptoms to COVID-19.

(COV-19 testing: shrouded in mystery. HHS claims there is no shortage, but nurses and doctors are all over cable news and the web objecting that they can’t get their patients – and themselves – tested. CDC website talks about a pcr test called 2019-nCoV Real-Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel. (PCR uses a clever method discovered some years back to amplify nucleotide sequences and it tests for viral DNA or maybe RNA. It is very accurate.) What is not clear: is that PCR test is the test that Ventura can run, does Atlanta just repeat the same test, with perhaps better control, or does it use the “research only” test. And what is going on with the early claims that the test was defective. Was it just one batch? The whole lot? Is the test accurate – how many false negatives? Remember the Texas case, where a false negative led to a carrier being released.
You middle ear, which is behind the eardrum, is connected to the upper respiratory system by the Eustachian tube. This tube can become inflamed/infected, particularly in children. However the source of such bacterial infections is from the throat, not the outer ear, because the eardrum separates those two. If you somehow damage (puncture) the eardrum then that’s a different story. Speaking of which, open wounds in general can be a source of viral entry. I’m not a BandAid user, as I believe fresh air is better than covering a wound, but I’d certainly think about covering any cuts these days.
Only 1% of people infected with the virus are asymptomatic. “fairly asymptomatic”
is a meaningless nonsense phrase. And 80% is the number who aren’t HOSPITALIZED. 90% of people who are infected get a fever, and 80% get a dry cough. Those are medical conditions that are symptoms of the disease, not “asymptoms”.

People have referred to cruise ships as Petri dishes because the virus is contained within the bounds of the ship (and I suppose the passengers are the agar that feeds the virus). CPAC is no Petri dish, it’s a mass gathering of people who are socially active and travel widely … the opposite of self-contained, or a lab.

Maybe. Mortality rates should always be calculated by the following formula: Mortality = (dead)/(dead*recovered)*100. Since the post you took the numbers from didn’t not specify the number of recovered, it’s premature to use the number infected in the denominator of that formula, because infected individuals have neither died nor recovered. Your assumption underestimates the mortality rate.
Correction: Mortality = (dead)/(dead + recovered)*100
We need to be prepareded. The City needs to be talking about emergency ordinances that prevents evictions, ensure quarantine compliance and that no large events are permitted. If also needs to begin alerting residents to the fact that older adults and those with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and heart conditions are extremely vulnerable. These patients have a much greater death rate compared to others. It is as much as 1 in 10. San Francisco has a Coronavirus alert system that was just implemented for residents. Other cities are seeking to implement ordinances that prohibit evictions and are already counseling events. Santa Barbara’s mayor said that the City would not be preventing cruise ships from arriving. If that’s the case, is she going to cancel any events to protect residents? Or, will she instead allow the Coronavirus to come to Santa Barbara because of wishful thinking that it will not end up here and allow events to occur and cruise passengers to arrive?

Note that it’s impossible to know how many people recovered if they aren’t counted, which is why the preferred term is CFR (Case Fatality Rate) = (count of deaths from disease)/(count of diagnosed cases) over some period of time. But comparisons using that value also be tricky, even when not premature, because the number of undiagnosed cases depends heavily on how much testing is done. For instance, many flu cases are never diagnosed (officially, going into a database), so the .1% CFR for the flu may be a lot higher than the actual mortality rate. OTOH, South Korea has extensive testing of COVID-19, so whatever CFR is calculated there will likely be close to the actual mortality rate. But in places where there’s little testing and a lot of community spread, the CFR may be inflated because all the deaths are recorded but only a fraction of the cases … at the same time, the actual mortality rate will *also* be higher because carriers aren’t being tracked and people are being exposed without their knowledge (in SK people have an app that tells them if they’re in proximity of someone who has been diagnosed). Run the numbers. Do your own personal risk assessment. Wash your hands. Don’t touch your mouth, eyes or nose with unclean fingers. Don’t invest in totems, amulets or surrogate shamanism. take a Myers-Briggs personality assessment to determine if you are an extra-vert or an intra-vert, as this will color your own sense of subjective vulnerability. Then run comparable risk assessments on other daily peril exposures: auto accidents; slip and fall; getting hit by a meteor; getting a flu or cold; or having a kitchen accident in your own home.

The month long lockdown announced in Italy impacts 16,000,000 people. That’s like shutting everything down from Ventura to the Mexican border. Italy is a western country: they don’t eat bats or have signs in hospitals that say “No Spitting” as I read about in China. Italy’s lifestyle is similar to us, yet they are imposing a regional lockdown. This is not the time to be complacent, but you also don’t need a pallet of TP. Keep you eye on the Bay Area because they are a few weeks ahead of us.
Ventura County is a large county. Is it not unreasonable that the public should be informed about the specific city?? The lack of testing that’s going on due the unavailability of test kits is egregious! I work in the medical community and have heard first hand that ER docs have to turn away patients who SHOULD BE TESTED because of the dearth of test kits and the still strict guidelines for who gets priority for being tested. The way this outbreak is being mishandled by our government is going to lead to a massive problem. Unfortunately it’s too late to stop the train that’s already left the station…

First of all…”asymptomatic set of flulike symptoms” is an oxymoron. I’m not trying to scare anyone “witless” as you say. However, I also think that the public deserves to be better informed about what’s really going on, instead of walking around blissfully unaware of the existence of community spread of this virus. The data thus far shows that 80% of people who contract Covid-19 will only have mild illness so they won’t be going to the ER or staying at home in bed…no, they will be out the community spreading it around to others may not be so fortunate to fall in that 80%. 20% of those who contract this virus will have serious illness that may even require hospitalization due to pneumonia. Mortality rates for this virus are 20-30 times higher than influenza.1% vs 2-3%. If you’re over 70 yrs it’s closer to 8-10%. So, with all that being said, this virus is not to be taken lightly folks. If anyone develops a sudden onset of a fever and a cough stay home and call your doctor!

At a time when we as a community need and want good solid public health information, it’s sad there are those here who want to politicize and generally muck things up with unreasonable down-voting and obfuscation. My guess is it’s coming mostly from partisans who see anything that can be viewed as criticism of the Federal response to this pandemic as a direct afront to the current administration and its coming election hopes.

Visit Santa Barbara needs to be de-funded by the City. They are encouraging tourists from Southern Can and the regioi TO Santa Barbara. We have cities South of us that have declared State of Emergency and have hot spots. The City is playing with fire if it thinks it should continue to fund this group that will import the Coronavirus to Santa Barbara.

It makes me angry every time I see those hosts walking around doing nothing on our tax dollars. What city have you EVER visited that has tourist hosts there to meet and greet you. This isn’t Disneyland! Ughhhhh.
How many tests has Santa Barbara actually done? I think ZERO. How can you confirm without a test? No confirmed cases certainly does not mean no one is infected. Just means they haven’t been tested. Government failure!

I enjoy reading the comments by posters on Edhat about the Wuhan virus. It gives me great relief, confidence and reassurance to know I am being advised by the fine graduates of the Twitter School of Medicine and the Facebook Institute of Immunology.
The virus was coming to Santa Barbara but couldn’t afford the housing so it skipped us and went to SLO.
