Ventura County has reported its first COVID-19 related death as the number of cases increases to 30.
The individual who passed away was in their 70’s with underlying health conditions, according to the Ventura County Public Health Department.
“Public Health extends our deepest condolences to the individual’s loved ones in the wake of this tragedy,” said Public Health Officer, Doctor Robert Levin.”In these uncertain times, one thing is clear; the spread of COVID-19 is broad. Everyone should assume that anyone can have COVID-19, and anyone could unintentionally infect others. Therefore, we are imploring everyone who can, to stay home and stay safe.”
Of the 30 cases in Ventura County, just 9 cases are age 65 and older while 13 cases are between the ages of 45 to 64.
San Luis Obispo County is reporting 27 confirmed cases while Santa Barbara County is reporting 18 confirmed cases.
At 70 who doesn’t have underlying health conditions .
The reason for this distribution may be that older people with or without underlying conditions are being more prudent and taking the “shelter in place” edict most seriously while some younger people feel they are safe even if they’re not . Some may also have health issues they aren’t factoring in, ignore or maybe are unaware of. Also the “gad about” factor of going out to meet new people declines seriously between college and retirement. Older people mostly socialize with old friends and/or go to bed early!
Let’s not generalize about the behaviors, ill or good, of folks over 65 or 70. Many are very active and are cruising the world, which has it’s own dangers. This virus is known not to discriminate between young and old. Unfortunately we don’t really know who is infected until they show up in their doctor’s office or the ER. Complete lack of testing for community spread.
