On April 18, 2020, around 11:40 P.M., Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol Officers observed two males engaged in a verbal altercation at the Harbor Parking Lot, in the 100 Block of Harbor Way. Harbor Patrol Officers requested the Santa Barbara Police Department’s assistance when one of the males became uncooperative.
Within minutes, a Police Supervisor and Officer arrived on scene. One of the males, now identified as Santa Barbara resident Dominic Sanginiti, age 35, appeared to be the main aggressor in the disturbance. He was heavily intoxicated and noncooperative.
As the two Police Officers attempted to calm Sanginiti, they observed a handgun holster attached to Sanginiti’s hip as well as a knife protruding from his pants pocket. Sanginiti refused to follow Officer’s commands. He then moved his hands in a menacing fashion while backing away. Officers requested additional cover units to respond immediately to the scene with lights and siren.
The two on-scene Officers attempted to subdue and detain Sanginiti in fear that he might reach for one of his weapons. Sanginiti took a combative stance and actively fought Officers. He continued to not comply with many verbal commands.
An on-scene Harbor Patrol Officer deployed his taser striking Sanginiti with two electric probes. This effectively allowed Police Officers to take Sanginiti to the ground. On the ground, Officers observed a black handgun protruding from Sanginiti’s waistband – not contained within the holster.
Sanginiti aggressively attacked and punched both Police Officers. Officers struggled with Sanginiti to ensure he could not reach for his weapon. Additional Officers arrived on scene to help subdue Sanginiti. Police Officers were able to eventually place Sanginiti in handcuffs and safely retrieve the loaded firearm.
The initial responding Supervisor and Police Officer involved in the arrest both sustained injuries that required immediate medical care. Their injuries included a dislocation and a broken bone. The suspect did not require medical care.
Sanginiti was arrested for 148.10(a) PC – Resisting Causing Serious Bodily Injury to an Officer, 69 PC – Resisting by Means of Force, 243(b) PC – Battery on a Peace Officer, 25850(a) PC – Carrying Loaded Firearm, 25400(a)(2) PC – Carrying Concealed Firearm, 148(a) PC – Resisting Arrest and 647(f) – Public Intoxication.
Sanginiti was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail and is awaiting arraignment.
Glad the officers showed restraint, at great risk to themselves. But whoa, what was this guy thinking? Dumb question, of course. Clearly not thinking at all.

Concern 1- The guy looks untouched in his booking photo
Concern 2- Harbor Patrol SBPD Officer AND a Supervisor couldn’t get a handle on this guy without getting injuried.
Concern 3- If they knew he was armed, why wasn’t he shot?
Concern 4- The City is LUCKY on this one- He could have shot and killed one or more Officer.
@ MTNDRIVER- The Officers were LUCKY they weren’t shot or killed… Their “restraint” could have easily turned into their death(s) considering dealing with an armed and aggressive combatant
3: According to the article he never went for the gun or knife, brandished the gun or knife, or verbally threatened to pull out the gun or knife. Only the officers *feared* he would. It’s not illegal to have a knife in your pocket. I’ll give them that he probably wasn’t legally concealing the gun and he’s an idiot for that, especially in his given state.

That’s fair–I assume that if they didn’t charge him it was a legal knife. Which of course means very little as you can get a legal knife open and stuck in someone’s chest very quickly, of course if you’re drunk and have a gun, why would you even carry the knife? Oh, right, because you’re ready and looking for a violent altercation. They should have shot the guy, he’s just wasting space. Not sure why you want to spend your time defending this guy.
Hey, it’s Sunday. I think I’ll take a nice walk, clean up around the house, help out a friend, maybe learn something new.
Nah, I’ll grab a gun and a knife, get drunk, and get into it with someone in a parking lot then fight with the cops who show up, and have a laugh about the fact that I managed to injure one of them while they were taking me in. Good times!
And then some idiot on Edhat will defend me even as their tax dollars are being spent to keep my idiot self. And then at some point I’ll get out and I’ll probably do something truly horrendous. Yay!

And, only one of the guys was arrested and jailed and charged, so common sense dictates the drunk guy with the gun and knife who ended up in jail is likely more to blame for the escalation of the dispute than the person who isn’t in jail on multiple charges. You need to study for and re-take the common sense quiz, bro.

Correct! For the most part, only criminals can carry firearms in Santa Barbara county.

M-cubed: So much for the presumption of innocence, due process and objectivity. Based on nothing more than a news article/press release you and others have judged and sentenced this person. Thankfully our Founding Fathers had enough experience, objectivity and patience to protect us from the crowd you represent. And, not many people have $3500 to throw away to get a bail bond. It is not like the bail was unreasonably low–$35,000 will assure his court appearances.
