Strong winds sent several trees crashing down throughout the Santa Barbara area on Thursday evening.

There were reported mountain gusts up to 78 mph. The Montecito Fire Department reported 16 calls overnight, starting with the damaging tree blown down in the above photo. Montecito firefighters do not report any injuries, but a lot of debris and utilities needing attention.

The intersection of Cota and Garden Streets was closed after a tree fell across the roadway. A larger tree was uprooted by the wind on the Santa Barbara High School campus.

California Highway Patrol reported the 1400 block of E. Valley Road on State Route 192 was temporarily closed due to a large oak tree that fell from the strong winds. Power lines were also reportedly down in the area.

Both lanes were shut down as Southern California Edison de-energized the lines and county crews safely cut down the tree.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out
of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

  1. Another one of those wonderful 85F in the house Santa Barbara evenings… At least we don’t have a zillion bugs like many other places. At my grandfather’s farm house in Kansas, the screen door always had about a 100 Miller moths on it waiting fly into the house as soon as it opened.

  2. Hmmm. The weather is whatever the geoengineers want it to be. Search David Keith, Harvard. Check out 1PacificRedwood on YT. Search solar radiation managment. Do your research. The info is all out there. Climate Change is manmade because its being purposefully engineered. 1962 Lyndon Johnson: “Those who control the weather control the world” It ain’t a new concept folks. [enter the Raytheon trolls]

  3. They were lunatics because they said that climate change was caused by human activity? Is that what you are saying? If so, climate scientists are saying the same exact thing, but just a little differently. Oh, how smart everyone is these days with internet “research” and links to this and that. And, please mind your manners….be polite please.

  4. “Activity” and “engineering” are quite different in this context. Human activity (eg, pollution, etc) contributes to climate change, yes, but that is not at all the same as saying humans are engineering and deliberately changing weather patterns.

  5. No, they are lunatics because they think that somehow a bunch of humans conspired to “engineer” and change the weather of the planet.
Literally one of the dumbest conspiracy theories out there. A small group of scientists and the ultra wealthy or illuminati or whatever ridiculous imaginary group people come up with could not mobilize hundreds of millions or billions of people over a century to achieve what we are now seeing as climate change. Morons.

  6. Regarding the “engineered weather” comments, some of you are actually very uninformed. Look up HAARP. Also, there was a lawsuit in Mexico against VW for engineering weather. VW did that to prevent hail storms from damaging their cars in their open air lots – and as a result it affected the amount of rainfall which damaged the farmers. Look it up. We can also make it rain by cloud seeding under favorable conditions. So yeah engineered weather is being done and has been for awhile. As far as being purposefully engineered to cause climate change, not sure about that. but I’ll leave it to y’all to argue about.
