Governor Gavin Newsom released guidance for hair salons and barbershops as indoor operations have been ordered to close during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The document provides guidance for hair salons and barbershops to support a safe, clean, outdoor environment for workers and customers.
“Outdoor operations may be conducted under a tent, canopy, or other sun shelter as long as no more than one side is closed, allowing sufficient outdoor air movement. Salons and barbershops should not perform a service that would require a customer to have to enter the establishment,” according to the guidance.
Newsom announced last week that several business sectors were ordered to once again shut down due to concerns over increasing COVID-19 cases for all counties on the state’s watch list, including Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
Statewide indoor closures include restaurants, bars and breweries, wineries & tasting rooms, movie theaters, family entertainment centers, zoos and museums, and cardrooms. County watch-list indoor closures include fitness centers, places of worship, indoor protests, offices for non-critical infrastructure sectors, personal care services, hair salons and barbershops, and malls.
Regarding restaurants, outdoor dining and takeout are still allowed.

HAIR SALONS, BARBERSHOPS, AND CERTAIN PERSONAL SERVICES NOW PERMITTED TO MOVE SOME ACTIVITIES OUTDOORS
In response to requests from personal care practitioners desiring to move some of their activities outdoors, Governor Newsom announced today that State of California guidelines have been modified to allow some personal care activities to occur in outside locations. Prior to the issuance of new guidelines, barbershops and hair salons were required by the State of California to remain closed. State law and regulations required that certain personal care services must occur within an indoor licensed setting.
Other personal care services, such as nail salon services and massages, are also authorized by the State for re-opening outdoors. Piercing, tattoo and electrolysis services are still prohibited from re-opening at this time.
The new guidelines outline the State of California’s requirements that must be met before an establishment may re-open in conformance with local regulations. For more information, visit the County of Santa Barbara’s website at www.recoverysbc.org.
Licensees should check with local zoning and permitting rules which may also apply to outdoor operations.

Oh my gosh….these poor entrepreneurs! Back pedal ….. forward pedal…back….forward. I sincerely hope you all survive these shutdowns by our Governor. He doesn’t seem to think things through before laying down the guidelines.

A year from now, we will have studied it to death and will have a better understanding. For now, it’s wing it and see what works. Will we and have we made mistakes – of course – we’re Americans. We can screw up anything before we figure it out.

Being in the industry for 12 years, it’s my personal belief that being indoors is safer for sanitation purposes and cleanliness bc it’s hard to make a sterile environment outdoors for estheticians. I get with the outdoors with the air it’s better, but many of us like myself work alone and I’m in a 650 square foot location and I can leave my enclosed room open for air. HOWEVER I’m grateful for the barbers and cosmetologists that do a lot of cutting. I’m glad they can at least make a little money, but I hope that the gov will see many of us take so much pride in our businesses and work and keep things immaculate. Working outdoors is not realistic for an esthetician, why you ask? I don’t know many ppl that would want to get a Brazilian wax in public ha!
I’m sure you are correct that many businesses keep things very clean, but the problem with indoors is that the airborne virus particles stick around indoors. The scientists seem to think they are dissipated better outdoors. Eventually someone will market an air scrubber that will clean the indoor air, but I reckon that is not currently available or affordable for your average business. Seems to me estheticians should be able to do business indoors if everyone involved wore N95 masks, and wore them properly (and maybe goggles, too). Are N95s available yet? Would estheticians and their clients wear them reliably? Just some thoughts I had—I don’t have a dog in this fight.
This is hilarious. It isn’t political when it’s about Newsom and he’s doing his best as we figure this out, But when it comes to for the “Orange man bad” crowd, it surely is all his fault and he’s responsible for everyone dying. The double standards present today are simply amazing.

We would 100% wear them. I already wear a face shield and mask and eyeglasses. We can even get plexiglass dividers that can hook into a face cradle on a massage table and be a barrier. To be honest I think politicians are uneducated about what we do and how many precautions we already take. The guidelines they gave us we’re hilarious bc if they knew anything about our industry the would know we already do the things they asked. The mask was a new guideline and shield when doing a facial and taking temperatures and requiring hand sanitizer when entering. I’m going on 5 months being closed. It’s hard for sure.
Forcing people to work in a tent is just one step further towards working completely off the books. Paying no taxes, no health department permit, no business license. Advertising in Craigslist for clients, going pirate.

trump has done nothing with regard to this virus. He is responsible for upward of 100,000 deaths. Had Hillary been president, the pandemic response team would have jumped on this in December, just like Obama jumped on Ebola and kept it out of the U.S. Hillary would have immediately invoked the Defense Production Act and we’d have had plenty of tests and PPE back in January. The country would not have been shut down. But go on, stay in your little trumpland….
