Santa Barbara County Animal Services wants to remind animal owners to help protect their pet(s) during the heat this time of year. Heat can cause serious health issues for animals and even death. There are several tips to help keep your furry family friends safe.
- Provide water and shade. Allow your pets to escape the heat and cool down.
- Never leave your pet(s) in a parked car. Temperatures rise inside a car and can cause your pet(s) to become overheated.
- Stay off the asphalt. If it’s too hot for you to walk without shoes, consider your furry friend’s paws.
- Limit exercise. Active animals are more susceptible to heat exhaustion.
Be alert to the signs of heat exhaustion. Things to be aware of are:
- High body temperature above 104 degrees
- Excessive prolonged panting
- High heart rate,
- Lethargy,
- Dark red and /or tacky tongue/gums, and
- Vomiting or diarrhea.
If you notice your pet experiencing any of these symptoms, get to your veterinarian right away.
