Local Woman Wins Nationwide Best Front Yard Contest

A Santa Barbara woman has won the “2020 America’s Best Front Yard Contest” by Better Homes & Gardens.

Stephanie Poole was recognized locally last month for winning the “2020 WaterWise Garden Recognition Contest” hosted by the Santa Barbara County Water Agency. She designed the family’s garden to be drought-tolerant and to attract native insects and birds. A rain barrel was also installed to capture rainwater on-site to use for irrigation and redirected the downspout pipes to the front yard rather than the street. The garden uses mostly rainwater and watering by hand, with some drip irrigation in the summer.

More renovation inspiration came from a “dead flat” driveway that Poole, an architect, envisioned as a bocce court.

“Our property is a postage stamp, so it was important for me to make use of all of our space, not only the backyard,” said Poole to Better Homes & Gardens.

The low wall was made from local sandstone, the bocce ball court came to life with decomposed granite, a vertical herb garden, and a few chairs around a firepit create an inviting feel.

  1. If the issue is privacy, why the hell would they enter it in a national contest? If their privacy is that important to them, they might want to skip telling the entire community that they won. If the address can be checked through Zillow, then the location isn’t all that private. I’m not interested enough to jump through hoops to find out something that should have been made public in the first place.
