Santa Barbara County Assigned to Purple Widespread COVID-19 Tier

California recently reached the milestone of 1 million COVID-19 cases statewide. With transmission and hospitalizations on the rise throughout the state and concern for acute care hospital capacity, the state has made changes to the Blueprint for a Safer Economy  to curb disease transmissions and reduce case rates.  As a result, Santa Barbara County is among 28 of the 58 counties throughout the state who will be moved back to Tier 1 (Purple/Widespread). Health Officer Order 2020 -12.14 has been issued to reflect sector changes and will take effect on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 11:59 p.m.

Governor Newsom announced the following changes to the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy for this week’s tier assignment:

  • Case rate and test positivity data will be from a 4-day lag instead of a 7-day lag, to give better visibility into recent changes.
  • Counties will be moved to a more restrictive tier with one week of worsening metrics. Previously, it took two weeks for a county to be moved.
  • Counties may be moved by more than one tier if metrics determine this is needed.
  • The health equity metric was not used for this week’s tier assignment from the State as there has been no forward movement for any county.

This change from the red to purple tier means that many businesses will be required to move to outdoor-only operations including restaurants, gym and fitness centers, places of worship, family entertainment centers, wineries, movie theatres, museums, zoos, aquariums and cardrooms. Bars, breweries and distilleries will be able to remain open as long as they are able to operate outside and with food with any purchase of alcohol. For all sector changes, view the latest Health Officer Order here.

“We are not only seeing cases increase in our county, but across the state and nation,” shared Dr. Henning Ansorg,” Santa Barbara County Health Officer. “Mixing that occurs indoors with people from different homes is the ideal environment for the virus to spread quickly.”

With movement to the most restrictive tier, schools that haven’t reopened will have to remain closed until the county moves back into the red tier or, for grades TK – 6, until they receive a waiver from the state to reopen for in-person learning with modifications.

“I cannot reiterate enough the seriousness of the current situation. We are at a critical point where every person must wear a face covering, avoid any gatherings with persons outside their home, and stay home if you are ill. ,” said Dr. Ansorg. “Holidays must look different this year if we want to avoid overburdening our health care system and further impacts to our economy.”

  1. Does food and a light breeze stop chinavirus?

  2. Goletatim, yes and apparently you can only get it after 10pm so a curfew is on the works. Kidding of course, but I plan to keep supporting my favorite local stores and restaurants until this is over. It’s not their fault people gathering in private homes has shut them down yet again.

  3. No, you still don’t get it. You don’t agree with reality, and therefore people don’t agree with you. You have opinions lifted off social media that you promote as fact, but they are far removed from that, ranging from the authority of state officials to enforce public health, to the efficacy of the health measures themselves, to the importance of commerce over staying alive. It’s indicative of the whole culture of ignorance that has taken root in this country since the 1980s.

  4. anyone wondering where the spike came from? halloween….. all those people that HAD to have trick or treating, or house parties….. wait till after thanksgiving and xmas. this is why we are back on lockdown they know people will be stupid and not follow the rules.

  5. All this arguing about proven science documented facts is stupid. Masks do lower the incidence of COVID-19, look at Korea, Taiwan, NZ, Aus and such. In the US the up to date data from Carnegie Mellon show a direct correlation between high mask use and lower infection: https://delphi.cmu.edu/blog/2020/10/12/new-and-improved-covid-symptom-survey-tracks-testing-and-mask-wearing/
Why argue about this when it is so easily shown true?

  6. It isn’t rocket science. But it is medical science. This will not be stopped until a vaccine is in order. We can all hide in a cave with bags over our heads till dooms day. It will not stop this terrible pandemic that China unleashed on the world.

  7. As of right now, the proof count stands at 11,205,486 in the USA alone, with between 160,000 and 180,000 more being added each day. But you haven’t personally encountered any or visited a hospital, so that must all be illusory.

  8. OOPS, Sorry, but I don’ t know what kind of rock you’ve been living under, but this is a REAL thing. This is not political, and I’m thankful to be living in a state where our governor cares about preventing as many cases as possible. Just have a look at Alabama if you want to live in a Red Hell that denies Covid.
