On January 7, 2021, at around 12:30 pm, passerby’s in the area heard gunshots, then observed a subject flee from the area. The witness observed the victims in the vehicle, and ran from the area to call 911. Responding deputies discovered two males seated in the front seat of a parked vehicle in the 600 block of Burtis St. One had suffered a fatal gunshot wound, the other was transported by paramedics.
The area between Hollister Ave. and Atascadero Creek from Turnpike to Patterson was issued a shelter in place order for several hours. Deputies, K-9s and a County Air Support Unit helicopter searched the area for the suspect, however he was not located.

Wow crime has really increased over here. Another shooting?!
SCANNERANDREW it’s been nasty over there for years. We rented a beautiful 3 bedroom near there for a couple years 10 years ago and I’m so glad we moved out to West Goleta, even to a smaller home. I’m so happy my kids didn’t grow up in that area.
More shootings. Until California is rid of criminal loving politicians, this will continue. This is the worst I’ve seen this state and no one is demanding answers. I guess as long as your weed is delivered and you can stay in your house watching Netflix, who cares?
This is tragic, but we have loved living in this area for over 9 years and it’s been great for our kids. “Affordable” Santa Barbara, centrally located, near the bike path, More Mesa, a mile from the ocean. A lot of good people live in this area. We have really enjoyed it.
LOL. It is no where near “Nasty”. I’ve been in this neighborhood for 13 years. The west side is nasty. This is a lovely neighborhood. Please take your comments elsewhere.
no, it has not increased.
my kids are growing up in that area and they couldn’t love it more. sorry your experience was bad. it’s a wonderful neighborhood.
The privilege here is hilarious. Thank goodness your poor kids didn’t have to grow up in west goleta 🙁
Do you think… crime doesn’t happen in places where republicans are elected?
LAKERGIRL – let me guess, you think we should have a good “law and order” guy like your boy who led yesterday’s insurrection?
I guess I have to be more specific when I say “over here.” I’m not talking about the neighborhood, I’m talking about both Goleta + SB crime as a whole. t seems like there’s been more shooting and deaths from it recently, as well as other major crimes.
but where is your proof? there has been NO crime/shooting/homicides in this area in a very very long time. so where is your backup?
I would agree with the soft and the SB being a beautiful and safe spot to raise kids. It’s tangibly and obviously getting worse though. Still a great spot…just seemingly becoming less great…daily.
I don’t think you realize how elitist that statement sounds. There is no “bad” area in Santa Barbara/Goleta. We are all privileged to live here. I am happy to raise my kids in any area and attend any school SB/Goleta has to offer. This is the unfortunate SB bubble mentality that we see with the long timers here.
Crime in CA is down significantly since the 80s and 90s when it was at its peak and it has stayed low throughout the 00s and 10s. You know what kind of crime is up? Hate crimes!
Honest question: Are hate crimes up, or are we defining more crimes as “hate crimes”?
Was Rogers and Addis’s to long ago to count? San Marco at the post office was 14 years ago. 3 mass murders in a small community!!
Looks like you haven’t been on Edhat in the last week. Just take a look.
I’d like to reiterate on my comment. I am not talking about crime in this neighborhood, I am talking about the crime in all of Goleta + SB. With all of Edhat news, Roger’s reports, and from what I hear on the scanner as well, it seems as though there have been more major crimes than before. There have been at least 3 confirmed shootings this week, 2 resulting in deaths. This is just one example. Though in total, SB fairly safe, things just happen. It happens in all cities.
There is crime everywhere. It doesn’t matter what area you are in. I’m certain that people who live here will tell you they love it. It’s a great neighborhood.
If you’re referring to the NH photo, note that it was taken after the occupants were removed, and both doors are open. Who knows where that glass was before those actions, or whether it was shattered in order to get the door open. Bullets would tend to punch discrete holes in the glass, rather than shatter it so thoroughly.
My comment @ 8:52 am is to JB86. This jumbled stacking order ruins the context of discussion . 🙁
It’s difficult to imagine that someone with your posting history could ask an “honest” question. Ask it anonymously and you might get a better response. As it stands, readers will take it in the context of your posting history. Sorry, but true, that’s how social media works.
What cracks me up is some people are thinking this is another gang shooting without reading the article…It’s kinda like fishing for Dumb Basses.
So you gave me 3 articles, one of which was NOT even in the neighborhood, one was from 10/2019 and one was from yesterday? Wow. GREAT investigating there.
SBMOM – Hahah oh wow… you didn’t even read them, did you? Not a single one was from yesterday (5/2019, 10/2020, 4/2020) and they were ALL around the Turnpike/Walnut area. One was on Walnut, another on Turnpike and the other was closer to Old Town, but still not far from that area. You are truly in denial and clearly didn’t read them. The point is, you’re wrong. There HAS been crime in that area, just as there has been all over SB/Goleta over the years. Look here, just a search of “Walnut” on Edhat brings up tons of Scanner Report incidents — https://www.edhat.com/search/node/walnut —– That area around Walnut/Turnpike has been pretty active on the criminal front for years. Nice try though!
