The Conventional Wisdom is that the Republican-backed effort to recall Gavin Newsom in a special election this year is doomed to fail – and that the Democratic governor will emerge from the campaign stronger than ever.
As every school child knows, the conventional wisdom is always wrong.
Carla Marinucci, the human whirlwind who serves as chief California correspondent for Washington D.C.-based Politico, makes a return appearance to Newsmakers TV, not only to explain the nuts and bolts of the recall (Actual Facts!), but also to note that political prognostications of the recall’s certain defeat (we name no names) may be at least a teeny bit premature.
In a fast-moving conversation, Carla sheds light on the ways and means by which pro-recall strategists believe they can boost turnout among energized pro-Trump Republicans and mainstream GOP types alike, creating an off-year universe of voters that will confound the pundits and put the lie to public polls now showing Newsom comfortably positioned.
Marinucci consistently has been out front in breaking stories and publishing lucid analysis of every aspect of the only-in-California recall clown car – from her decades-long history of covering Newsom to her scoops about Caitlyn Jenner’s baffling voting record and her face-to-face encounter with John Cox’s Kodiak bear (herein described in chilling detail).
A superstar among the state press corps, Costco Carla provides a seasoned and sophisticated perspective on both the substance and the silliness of this strange political moment, as she offers all the latest on the recall’s cast of characters — along with updates on what other major California players are up to, from Senators Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla, to past and present Attorney Generals Xavier Becerra and Rob Bonta, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker-in-Waiting Kevin McCarthy.
Despite her caveat of caution, Marinucci’s bottom line on the recall: “I think (Newsom) survives (and) a lot of the recall looks like a circus.”
It’s all here, right now, on Newsmakers TV.

“Repubs don’t mind spending your money in attempts to fix elections” – I didn’t know they were the ones who spent tens of millions of dollars and thousands of wasted legislative hours chasing the Russian collusion hoax. You learn something new everyday! Spending our money to fix elections is how I would describe H.R.1.
The recall is silly. Newsom will be re-elected in a landslide. Getting the votes for a recall election is easy. Getting votes in California against a sitting Democrat is extremely difficult.
Yeah, no coastwatch
VOR, most reasonable people know Trump and his campaign colluded with Putin because Putin wanted a weak president. Worked out great for him. The most amazing thing that happened in the last 4 years is watching the Repubs support the evil empire. But they’ve become very comfortable with dictators.
Notice how he has changed his tune since the recall was confirmed? He’s feeling the heat and sweating. I think the fatal sword in his coffin was deciding who’s business is and isn’t “essential”
PITMIX – the best part was all those big truck-driving MAGA “men” in the midwest crying about their gas prices when Russia hacked our pipeline, but conveniently not blaming their new buddy Putin. Same goes for our Democracy. Russia attacked the foundation of America in 2016 (and attempted 2020 as well), yet all these MAGA-ites refuse to be upset with a communist dictatorship attacking our country because their blind hatred toward liberals and devotion to Trump made them think a PROVEN Russian attack on the United States of America was OK.
Not sure who said it, but I saw something perfectly apt for this bunch on Facebook. “Idolizing a politician is like believing a stripper really likes you.”
Yep…truly hypocritical. Then again, that’s pretty common on both sides though, right? I mean, it’s no longer a “crisis on the southern border with kids in cages” now it’s “challenges with the Southern border” with more kids packed tighter into the exact same holding facilities. The liberals have become so blinded by hate that they can’t see their own hypocrisy and delusion…which truly mirrors that of the the far right. Two sides of the same coin…
DUKE – It was a “crisis” because Trump ordered the separation of kids from their parents as a policy. That is no longer policy, therefore, the “crisis” is over and now we have the fallout (lost kids) and new kids coming over unaccompanied by adults. So….. not really the same thing. Plenty of other liberal hypocritical moments though, but that one not so much.
@ PITMIX… Clue in pal https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article251323953.html
Lmao “sword in the coffin,” maybe the CA GOP can call a psychiatrist and kill two stones with one bird
I wouldn’t quite declare it over…the numbers are fairly staggering. Some of that obviously is built up excitement/delay from waiting for Trump to leave…but I don’t see how a reasonable person could look at the numbers (178k in April, of which over 17k are unaccompanied minors) and not call that a crisis…
COAST – great article, but I’m confused. This is about Newsom planning to spend a lot of money to help solve the homeless problem in CA. Isn’t that what everyone has been complaining about here? You all are constantly crying every time there’s a homeless fire and now you don’t want him to fix it? Not sure I follow here.
I really hope that the recall does not end up with a change of governor, but according to some, it just might happen. Certainly he has been weakened by efforts to get him out of office. There’s no argument that California has gone downhill in many respects, much of it due to Newsom. Most of our major cities have completely turned into dumps. Even shiny Santa Barbara continues to get shabbier and shabbier by the day. You can’t blame anyone but the residents of certain areas that are trashed and filthy.
DUKE – right, it’s not over. My bad, poor choice of words again. No, it’s not over, but the policy of family separation IS over. That was Trump’s “contribution” to humanity. Now we’re trying to clean up the aftermath. Again though, not comparable and not analogous to the apparent Republican love affair with all things Russian these days.
@SAC- Yeah, throw money at drug and alcohol abusers and the only thing that will change is the “Homeless Inc” administrators will be quadrupled and richer… That 12 BILLION could be spent a lot smarter on our kids programs, Jr. Colleges. Trade Schools and State Campgrounds that are in a complete disarray- Not to mention our roads, freeways and infrastructure.
This RECALL, as much as Politico would like you to believe, has NOTHING to do with “Trump Republicans, Republicans in general or for that matter Democrats and Libertarians…” It HAS to do with a total RECALL effort by CALIFORNIANS who are fed up with the “leadership” and wasteful spending. social programs like allocating $12 BILLION DOLLARS of taxpayer funds to Homeless Inc. among others….. There is a reason businesses and people are leaving the once “Golden State”.
It’s hilarious that CA Republicans are even throwing Trump under the bus for the tiny chance that they can get another reality TV freak show or some has-been elected. Let’s elect Jenner or the guy with the dancing bear, I’m sure they have brilliant plans. Lmao
Governor Jenner please save us lol bahahaha
so you think replacing him with another is going to be any better? you’re fooling yourselves….nice way to keep yourselves busy i suppose lol…
Newsom…leave him be . Go after Homeless Inc. instead, and all the so-called nonprofits scamming the indigent populace. Some big fish to fry in the nonprofit sector.
Not one shred of truth in your post aside from the fact that there will be a recall election, because Repubs don’t mind spending your money in attempts to fix elections. Budget surplus and rich people moving to CA say the recall won’t go through.
Middle of the road no longer exists. You’re either a Trumper or Antifa, depending on which side you are on to start with.
Recall Newsome! And replace him with no one!
Come on man!!! Not one shred of truth Pitmix? Didn’t CA just lose 2 seat’s because of declining population? That’s a fact Jack!!! It was even on CNN.
This recall is a complete waste of $400,000,000. Newsome is up for reelection next freaking year and any GOP candidate will have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning . The stunt is a long shot at getting a Republican governor. If GOPers are serious about government spending they would have never launched this ridiculous recall initiative. It is a yet another fundraising ripoff by the feeble California GOP, fueled by idiotic MAGA outrage. For the statistically challenged, California is not losing population. The population of California in 2010 was 37,253,956, in 2020 it was 39,538,223 that is a gain of 2,284,267 people. The reason that the state may lose seats in the House is that other state’s populations have increased by a higher amount.
I don’t remember the last time a governor of California serve out their term without someone trying to recall them. Possibly before I was born. I also don’t remember any governor of California ever actually being recalled other than Davis. Davis had the trifecta- dumb, arrogant, and greedy. That still would not have gotten him canceled without the bad luck of Enron blowing up in his face. We replaced him with schwartznegger who was charming, respected, and friendly but who did little to solve California’s long term energy woes. Brown accomplished even less unless you count his express train from Bakersfield to Stockton. Newsome is terrible but he’s gonna survive this recall unless something unforeseen pops up that harms many people’s interests and attaches to him personally. No, it won’t be rolling blackouts because Californians have gotten used to third world power grid syndrome. It would have to be something else, like a collapse of government services, the housing market, or televised sports.
All that said I am almost sorry that I am no longer eligible to vote for Jenner. Good luck California.
I’m a lifelong Democrat and I despise Newsom. He stands for nothing and says nothing. Completely useless and incompetent.
