After a Covid recess in 2020 the Santa Barbara Independence Day fireworks returned to the waterfront. In addition to the more frequent reds and greens there were also blues and golds. An appreciative and enthusiastic crowd welcomed their return with loud cheers and maritime toots from the harbor.

I like to see the big starbursts, but I dislike the booms, unless I’m expecting them. The problem with random fireworks in neighborhoods is that they are intermittent and unpredictable. Four PM, midnight, who knows when a percussive bang will occur? I was surprised to see people setting off large, showy fireworks right on Micheltorena last night, before and during the official display at the beach. Not safe, and aren’t those awfully expensive?
What a crock of bull-ony. Getting sent to Folsom for setting off a few fireworks on the 4th of July. LOL! Thanks for the Holiday laugh.
Would love to see us switch over to drone displays.
The fire danger, the PTSD for our vets, our pets freaked out, the smoke/debris…there is no need to continue with explosives locally.
Baby, are your neighbors the ones who shoot guns at the sky on NYE too? Just because something seems like fun to some people doesn’t mean it’s safe.
Helena: Yes, my neighbors also usually shoot off several shotgun blasts on NYE each year. Keep in mind, a lot of the NYE “sky” shooting and 4th of July ballistic boom-booms are often alcohol-driven bravado. Booze is most often the catalyst for their behavior. Although we in the neighborhood enjoy their antics for the most part, I think it’s only a matter of time before one of them gets badly injured. Sometimes their homemade “jobs” go off earlier than they expect due to either short fuses or fast-burning fuses. So far, so good though.

“Fireworks are lame. They pollute and they scare animals both wild and domestic.”————–**Please take my upvote.** The amount of pyrotechnics going off on the Westside last night was WAY out of control. In at least four locations idiots set off over a dozen-plus blasts w/ accompanying booms —- per location. Gunshots (about 14 or so) from one gun-happy jerk right at midnight, somewhere near The Riviera. In reply to his salvo, other gunshots from various parts of town. At around 3:00 a.m. some idjit set off what sounded and felt like an M-80.
Babycakes, your neighbors are F@%^*#^% idiots. probably won’t kill anyone with a shotgun pellet falling out of the sky, but why chance it.
We had way more big fireworks right in our Westside neighborhood, way more than usual. Big starburst ones, even.
Yea, it’s pretty disgusting how out of control the illegal fireworks and complete disregard for neighbors with PTSD and pets has gotten. Shame on anyone who thinks it is appropriate to set off those massively booming fireworks in the middle of a neighborhood. What a disservice.
The local neighborhood fireworks are simply part of a long-time tradition of celebrating the 4th of July in a grand manner. I’ll admit that some of the folks lighting off the fireworks go a little overboard, but it’s all in good fun. Anyone with PTSD knows it’s coming and plan for the event. People who have pets that freak out due to the loud noise also know how to calm them down with treats, heavy blankets, and lots of loving hugs. It’s not like the booms/flashes are the end of the world or anything. My neighbor sets off anywhere from 20-30 dry-ice “bombs” each years. They are incredibly loud, and so very cheap to make. Overall, I think MOST people enjoy the extra fireworks….not everyone, but as they say, “majority rules!”
Fireworks are lame. They pollute and they scare animals both wild and domestic.
Hey Baby get back to me when one of your neighbors starts a fire with their fun traditional back yard fireworks. It is illegal and freaking dangerous.
….that’s why the dry-ice “fireworks” are the best because they have no flames whatsoever. The “shell” are the type that can cause fires, but in 35 years…..zero fires. If you really want illegal and dangerous, go to one of our illustrious homeless camps or a roast out.
Dry ice “bombs” are dangerous and illegal in California reference penal code 12301 section 6 “(6) Any sealed device containing dry ice (CO2) or other chemically
reactive substances assembled for the purpose of causing an
explosion by a chemical reaction.”
Baby why do you hang around with criminals?
BABYCAKES, just because fireworks are LOUD doesn’t mean the “majority” of people support them, that’s a foolish thought. The argument that homeless camps start fires so we shouldn’t care about some ILLEGAL fireworks (wtf?) is also a wild and crazy foolish thought. One fire danger is worse so who cares about the other? Huh??? The barbecue is more dangerous but that doesn’t mean you don’t use common fire safety sense while using the stove.
I think it is reasonable to have a sanctioned, safe show at a scheduled time and place so that PTSD sufferers and pet owners can easily accommodate your 30 minutes of pleasure. You seem completely unaware of the illegal fireworks problem that has multiplied in the last few years. No one is paying extra for the no-fire fireworks you speak of. Safe and sane private fireworks are one thing, the massive fireworks being set off on the Westside etc. last night are not those. God forbid we save pets’ lives and save PTSD sufferers some grief in the name of me-me-me selfish pleasure.
@11:39: I just yelled out my window to my neighbor’s house and said, “Hey, someone on Edhat wants to know why I hang out with you criminals,” and he yelled back, “Because we’re fun!” So, I guess it’s because these particular criminals are fun, hard-working, loyal, and honest.
BABYCAKES, read again. It is about the danger and the effect on your neighbors for miles around. Seems you ignore all logical arguments that refute your points in favor of some random technicality.
You may want to tell him that he was committing multiple felonies last night. Each act has a potential penalty of two years in prison. Oh that right laws are only for some people.
12:20: He said, and I quote, “She probably won’t want to be around during Fiesta week if she don’t like the felony boom-booms. Is she from New York or something?”
Hope no-one calls the police on your friend when he is setting off his boom booms during Fiesta. He will not like living in Folsom for a couple of years.
And so you are saying that they should all just self-deport out of town on the 4th to somewhere quiet, or strap headphones on and blast new age music, or take drugs to calm them down? In my neighborhood they would have to do this on the 2nd and 3rd and 5th, too. Last year there were explosions all month long. I know an ex-soldier who reacts at the sound of helicopters due to their time in Iraq. How do you suggest they avoid those?
We can have colorful fireworks displays without so many of the big booms, right? The so-called “silent fireworks” which are quieter than some of the others? But probably most people like the traditional loud booms because that is how we imagine bombs bursting in midair sounds like?
Worst fireworks show ever! Maybe if the city put on a real show the illegal works would slow done. The bombs were too low to have a really great visual impact. We must have bought the lower priced , lower altitude package. There were really great shows when there were some 4 th of July nonprofits involved. Going to “ Folsom “. Get outta here, the DA wouldn’t prosecute, just like they don’t for all the other public nuisance crimes. I will continue to light my own fireworks every year, just like I’ve done for the last 20 years. Now that’s Independence Day. Lighten up people it’s one day per year
Helena, it’s called 4th of july fireworks. it happens every year as part of our celebration of our countries birthday. Maybe move to Cuba and you won’t have to deal with this.
yes and pet owners like myself know there will be explosions and so on. people in this town just love to complain about something! I secured my dog, left, watched the first 5 mins and went back to my dog to hang with her. it was a spectacular show this year!
then people with pets, myself included, should know what to do. Also, we’re not stopping the tradition just because some over entitled dog owner doesn’t know how to manage his k9 during this 20 minute period once a year. think it through….it’s every year, 15 to 20 minutes, same day and time each year too. so let’s whine again next July 5th. See ya then! 😀
