The public also sees the employment of more Homeless Inc staffers, now invested in their own jobs which would end if they every solved this underlying problem. The 10 Pear Plan to End Homelessness, initiated well over a decade ago under Mayor Helene Schneider’s guidance, also identified this vast diffusion of staffing efforts and promised to consolidate them under a single command and control structure and one “homeless czar”. Never happened, 10 years long past and even more of a time and money completely unaccountable, except for the continuing growth of vagrant camps and Homeless Inc staff; while noticing little growth in outlying areas not blessed with the top-heavy staff Homeless Inc we keep supporting for reasons unknown.
Agree with Bosco & Byzantium. All of the programs have minimal, if any, success….except for the directors with pretty hefty paychecks, and the enablers/ social workers. Many nonprofits support staff but not their target populations…. including the Safe Parking Program. It’s almost criminal
If there was nowhere for these people to camp, they’d move along… If there were not 100’s of people who make their living from Federal, State, County and NGO grants, who use the majority of funds to pay their salaries and commercial rent, then most of the bums would be elsewhere. In fact, there are several cities in the desert where one can live for free, without hassle. But you cant panhandle from other bums and you cant get a free lunch or a 40oz every single day. So instead, they come here. Where they get everything they need, for free. Stop pandering. Start punishing. Fence off every campsite. Start fining private property owners who allow camping or blight on their property and shut down the dozens of agencies and orgs that exist under the false pretense that they’re “here to help”…. Forget the orgs, just give the cash directly to the bums. Easier and less of a lie. In fact it would be cheaper to buy each one of these folks an old RV, give them a tank of gas a few weeks worth of food, a map and then point them east. Problem solved at a fraction of the price.
One easy solution is to force every church in town to house and feed the bums. If the churches refuse, then tax them as they are clearly not acting in the interest of their God, or any organized religion for that matter, but are instead political clubs masquerading as churches to avoid taxes. Unless these churches can cite their scripture where they are instructed “To not feed or house the poor or the sick”. If they can point to those lines, then by all means, they’re free to go about their ways … We can also pass a state law that makes it illegal for Churches to refuse services to people and also encourages citizens to turn in their local church goer for violating their faith’s covenants and the law. God’s law that is. After all, according to the Christians in TX, all lives are sacred and its their duty to uphold God’s will regardless of the reality of the situation.
