Update by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office
Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Goleta man for the attempted murder of his roommate. On Monday, August 23, 2021, at approximately 12:40 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies were dispatch with County Fire and American Medical Response (AMR) to a possible stabbing in the area of Tecolote Avenue and Aguila Avenue. When deputies arrived, they contacted the victim who indicated that the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Halbert Rodriguez of Goleta, had hit him in the head with an unsharpened sword causing serious injury. The victim told deputies that the suspect was inside of a residence in the 5700-block of Aguila Avenue.
Deputies spotted the suspect in the doorway of the residence and requested that he step out to speak with them, but he refused. Additional units including K9s, Air Support, Special Enforcement Team and the Crisis Intervention Team responded to assist. Deputies enlisted help from the suspect’s mother who was able to convince him to step outside where he was taken into custody without further incident at 1:35 p.m.
Rodriguez is receiving medical attention for minor injuries before being booked at the Main Jail for attempted murder (felony). His bail amount will not be available until after booking. The victim was transported by AMR to an area hospital and is expected to recover.

Sheriff is on scene for a subject that assaulted a person with a machete in the 100 block of Tecolote in Goleta.
SBCSO update – “step outside where he was taken into custody without further incident …”.
Then the very next statement: “Rodriguez is receiving medical attention for minor injuries…”
so apparently the “Victim”(expected to recover) wasn’t the only injury?
Traffic, Crime, Congestion . Welcome to the new L.A. North AKA Santa Barbara
Yes, Goleta is looking more and more like Santa Maria. At least it doesn’t smell like Santa Maria.
The time of LEO response was 2:09 a.m, the victim rode a bicycle to the hospital, the stabbing took place near Highway 217. Given mode of transportation, time and location, this has “houseless neighbors” written all over it.
LEO’s located the suspect in the Old Town Goleta area and was arrested in the area of Magnolia Avenue and Mandarin Drive. Given location, his has gangsta written all over it.
Is it one or the other or both?
And north of Patterson is like downtown Broadway, Santa Maria – at least it looks like it.
Defund the Police may mean whatever to certain people, but the result is a massive amount of officers leaving the job. Their either retiring, going to a place not promoting that, or just bailing.
I can’t say I blame them. Who in their right mind would want to become a cop right now? I certainly wouldn’t. So you all keep up the chant and I’ll move my gun safe closer.
Let’s defund the police and let those criminals commit even more crime !
Nice healthy society that we’re preparing for us !
Whoops, that’s not the meaning of defund the police.
Please stop. The defunding issue is about making them pay for their own crimes instead of taxpayers shelling out billions to defend the bad cops and compensate their victims.
FOND – I feel like you know by now that’s not what it means, nor is that the purpose. You crop dust every comment thread about crime with this bs, and every time at least 5 people explain it to you, yet every time, you do it again. Trollish really.
LINA24 – Goleta looks like downtown Santa Maria? Wow, so it’s clear you’ve never been to either. You should get out more, it will make you a more rounded person.
There are quite a few people who believe that (and advocate for) defunding the police as getting rid of funding for police. Perhaps a different phrase better would better suit the “defund” crowd that means something other than “defund”.
Demilitarize the police. Defund the GOP.
That is a much much better slogan! It actually makes sense as it actually says what it means… and it’s something that almost will get behind!! Amazing what’s possible when you use language appropriately…
I always laugh at the insecurity of people that put “SBLOCAL” on their license plates or locals only for their handle. How insecure are you pal? (And before you post the obvious I was born here in 68 and was lucky enough to have several acres)
Doulie – the power and influence of the police and teachers union needs to be wildly curtailed. That’s the biggest issue… they simply have too much power and sway to protect, shelter and keep bad teachers and officers.
DOULIE, Qualified immunity only applies to when they’re doing their job properly – following proper protocol and not breaking the law. Once they cross that line they are no longer qualified. Beating arrestees, tasing them in the groin, too long chokeholds or kneeling on their necks- especially when they can’t breathe, shooting them for minor incidents, planting items on them, etc., is not following proper protocol, so they are not immune from prosecution in those instances. Bottom line – they’re not above the law.
I’ve been to both. Sorry I don’t mean to offend but they both need serious updating. Just the area on Hollister between Patterson and Fairview reminds me of Broadway in Santa Maria between Betteravia and Main. They still have that plain 60’s look. Looks very dated without the charm of other eras.
That’s not what “defund” means, but I bet you already know that, right?
Sacjon : if they meant anything else they would SAY something else.
Words have MEANINGS and significations. And you know that. Stop hiding behind your phony excuses !
FONDOFSB – Who is “they?” There isn’t a “Defund The Police” group. It’s a concept that EVERYONE, except people like you who pretend to not know what it means, understands to mean “divest funds from militarizing the police into other, more adept professional services.”
If this slogan confuses you, how do you feel about other figurative slogans? Do you think “Blue Lives” pertains to humans with blue skin? You certainly can’t have “blue lives” since it refers to a uniform (which is removeable but that’s another comment thread). Do you get confused by that?
DUKE – you’re right. I can see poor old FONDOFSB is perpetually confused by this. Maybe “Divest from the Police?” Sadly, a lot of people won’t understand that either.
SBO has a good one – “Demilitarize the Police.” It’s on the right track!
All area south of Patterson has always been North LA!
