A Hazmat team responded to Eling’s Hall on UCSB’s campus early Thursday morning for a suspected chlorine leak.
At 6:06 a.m. the Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to various alarms ringing at the UC Santa Barbara campus. The incident was upgraded to a Hazmat situation after it was discovered that chlorine was leaking inside Eling’s Hall.
The building was evacuated as the Hazmat team arrived and firefighters attempted to reset the alarm.
Firefighters wearing fully encapsulated Level-A protective suits, made entry into Elings Hall. They shut off chlorine tanks in a laboratory on the third floor.
After an investigation, teams determined there were no leaks and will continue to monitor the building’s alarm sensors.

Great photos Mike Eliason. We are lucky that Elings Hall has windows! What would this be like in an “experimental building” aka Munger Hall without any fresh air. Dangerous.
Did Munger Hall have plans for a laboratory that used Chlorine? Pay attention to how many places you go every day that don’t have windows.
